Press release 85/2013

Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen’s Government is in its mid-term policy review session today, on Thursday 28 February, at the House of the Estates.

The session began with a presentation by Secretary-General of the OECD Angel Gurría: Finland in the global world - Where are we going? In his address, Gurría presented key policy measures taken by certain other countries to promote growth, structural reform and wellbeing.

As monitored by the Prime Minister's Office, about 80 per cent of the objectives and projects laid down in the Government Programme are being implemented during the electoral period.

In the morning session, the Government assessed the situation with regard to the implementation of the Government Programme. The most critical objectives of the Government Programme which need further policy decisions relate to economic growth, employment and the sustainability of public finances. The implementation of the Government Programme and guidelines for the rest of the electoral period were discussed on the basis of three main priorities of the Government Programme. These priority areas are the reduction of poverty, inequality and social exclusion; consolidation of public finances; and the strengthening of sustainable economic growth, employment and competitiveness.

In the afternoon session, the Government will make policy decisions seeking to provide conditions for a higher employment rate, more intensive job creation, faster economic growth and better balance of public finances. Detailed decisions will be made later as part of the decision on spending limits for 2014-2017. The Government's mid-term policy review session and the government spending limits discussion on 21 March together form the mid-term review of the Government Programme.
