27 June 2016

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, ICANN, will organise its 56th meeting in Helsinki on 27 –30 June 2016. Over a thousand participants from different countries are expected to attend.

ICANN56 in Helsinki will be the first Policy Forum meeting, which aims at continuing the promotion of Internet policy and at spreading awareness of Internet governance. ICANN meetings are free to anyone with an interest in the Internet.

At the end of September, ICANN is expected to assume the main responsibility for the stewardship of functions that are vital from the point of view of the operational integrity of the Internet. The US National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has informed that it will relinquish its role and asked the global multi-stakeholder community to prepare a proposal of the future arrangements. The proposal is currently being assessed by the US Government .

ICANN is a non-profit organisation, which is dedicated to a continued secure, stable and interoperable operation of the Internet. ICANN is responsible for Top Level Domains (TLDs), such as the administration of country codes and generic domain name labels and for the technical coordination and administration of global Domain Name Systems (DNS) and other identifiers, such as IP addresses.

ICANN56 in Helsinki will be hosted by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority.
