Foreign Minister Tuomioja to the EU Foreign Affairs Council and the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers meeting in Brussels

Minister for Foreign Affairs Erkki Tuomioja will participate in the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels on Monday 18 May.

In the Foreign Affairs Council meeting, foreign and defence ministers will prepare the security and defence part (CSDP) of the June European Council and debate the Security Strategy review. In addition, the ministers will take stock of the implementation of the statement of the Extraordinary European Council of 23 April relating to the situation in the Mediterranean and migration as concerns CSDP actions in particular. The Foreign Ministers will discuss the Middle East Peace Process, too.

On Tuesday 19 May, Minister Tuomioja will participate in the Session of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers.

In the meeting, the 47 member states of the Council will discuss the state of human rights and democracy in Europe. Another central topic on the meeting agenda will be the Council of Europe's measures in the fight against terrorism. The meeting will adopt an additional protocol to the Council of Europe’s Convention on the Prevention of Terrorism focusing on foreign terrorist fighters and an action plan for measures to tackle radicalisation and extremist thinking. The Ministers will also discuss the Ukraine crisis and the Council of Europe's actions to help resolve the situation.
