The Office of the Chancellor of Justice supervises the lawfulness of the actions of public officials and promotes the legal protection of individuals. This is carried out by overseeing the lawfulness of the official actions of the Government and the President of the Republic, and supervising that other authorities, public employees and advocates obey the law.

 

In the performance of his or her duties, the Chancellor of Justice monitors the implementation of basic rights and liberties and human rights.

 

Complaints can be submitted to the Chancellor of Justice against the actions of an authority. The Chancellor of Justice can also investigate matters on his or her own initiative. The supervisory tasks include providing the President of the Republic and the Ministries with information and opinions on legal issues.

 

The Chancellor of Justice and the Deputy Chancellor of Justice are appointed by the President of the Republic.

 

Chancellor of Justice

The basic provisions concerning the status and duties of the Chancellor of Justice are laid down in the Constitution of Finland. More detailed provisions are issued in the Act on the Chancellor of Justice.

 

The present Chancellor of Justice is Mr Jaakko Jonkka (Doctor of Laws). The present Deputy Chancellor of Justice is Mr Mikko Puumalainen (Licentiate of Laws).
