Minister of Education Li Andersson visited London this week. Tuesday 24 May Andersson participated in a panel discussion at the Education World Forum, which focused on educational equality, digitalisation, smooth educational paths and international cooperation.

During the visit, Minister Andersson met with Ukrainian Education Minister Serhiy Shkarlet, Secretary of State for Education Nadhim Zahawi, Minister for Children and Families Will Quince, Shadow Secretary of State for Education Bridget Phillipson, Ambassador of the EU delegation João Vale de Almeida and Finnish students and researchers living in the United Kingdom, among others.

“Regardless of Brexit, the United Kingdom is still an integral part of Europe, a valued partner and a significant part of the European Education Area. It is important to ensure the continuation of our research cooperation and to re-establish cooperation on student mobility,” said Minister Andersson.

Student mobility between Finland and the UK was also discussed during the visit. Student mobility that takes place already in primary and secondary school paves the way for cooperation and mobility in higher education. Pre-Brexit, a large number of Finnish students chose the UK as the destination of their exchange student years, but now the situation is different.

“It is important that we equip young people to become more international and open-minded. An international approach in education boosts the resilience of society. This is an important message in the current situation,” Andersson said.

Other topics on the agenda included the role of media literacy, science, technology, art and mathematics in a sustainable society.
