Heikki Kanninen is elected Vice-President of the General Court of the EU
Judge Heikki Kanninen has been elected Vice-President of the General Court of the European Union. The task of the Vice-President is to assist the President in carrying out his duties and to replace him in his absence. The post of Vice-President has been now founded due to increased workload of the General Court.
The General Court has its seat in Luxembourg and makes part of the Court of Justice of the European Union. It makes rulings on actions brought by businesses and individuals against acts of EU institutions, often against the Commission. The acts of the Commission can be brought before the court also by Member States. Last year the General Court made 688 rulings on actions relating to areas such as EU competition legislation, state-funded subsidies, intellectual property rights and access to documents.
Mr Kanninen has acted as Judge at the General Court of the European Union since 2009. He has previously acted as Judge at the Supreme Administrative Court of Finland and at the European Union Civil Service Tribunal. Mr Kanninen's term as Vice-President will end in August 2016.
