Minister Tiilikainen: The proposal by the European Commission on implementing the Paris Agreement presents a challenging target for Finland

The European Commission presented 20th of July the remaining proposals on implementing the Paris Agreement within the European Union. The proposal presented today on the emissions reduction obligations of the Member States provides additional climate measures for sectors outside emissions trading: transport, heating, waste management and agriculture. In addition to this, the Commission presented a proposal on calculating emissions and sinks in the land use and forestry sectors
Finland has a high emissions reduction target in these sectors: 39%. It is stricter than we expected, because we were prepared for a target of 37–38%. We must check the Commission’s calculation methods and initial data carefully.
