Speaking at the International Donors Conference in solidarity with Venezuelan migrants and refugees in the countries of the region on 26 May 2020, Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto announced that Finland will provide additional EUR 200,000 as support for Venezuelan refugees living in Colombia. The support will be channelled through the Inter-American Development Bank.

The coronavirus pandemic is contributing to an even more desperate humanitarian situation in Venezuela. More than five million Venezuelans have fled their home country, mainly to other Latin American countries. For example, there are currently 1.8 million Venezuelan migrants or refugees living in Colombia. Securing decent living conditions for them is a huge challenge requiring support from the international community.

“We need to pay particular attention to the most vulnerable groups, such as women, girls and persons with disabilities,” Minister for Foreign Affairs Haavisto emphasises.
