Work on new Defence Policy Report to begin
The Ministry of Defence has launched the preparation of a new Defence Policy Report, in accordance with the Government Programme's objectives. On 8 September 2023, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed the matter in their meeting.
The Defence Policy Report sets out defence policy guidelines for maintaining and developing Finland's defence capability, taking into account the effects of Finland's NATO membership. The Report discusses the coordination of Finland's defence system as part of NATO's collective defence and deterrence and defines guidelines for Finland's defence policy and military role in the Alliance. The timeline of the Defence Report extends beyond the current parliamentary term and into the early 2030s.
To be prepared in close cross-administrative cooperation under the leadership of the Ministry of Defence, the Defence Report will be submitted to Parliament in the course of 2024, after the Foreign and Security Policy Report.
It is going to be the third Government Defence Policy Report as the previous one was completed in 2021.
