This culture conference will discuss the future of the EU from the perspectives of culture, creativity, democracy, education and changing politics. It will consider the key role culture plays in sustainable development and inspire debate on why creativity and cultural engagement should be cherished more in the EU and how this could be accomplished.

Minister of Science and Culture Annika Saarikko and Commissioner Tibor Navracsics will open the conference.

How and why do our emotions, values, identity and understanding affect the ways in which we think, talk and make political decisions? This is the topic of Enlightenment 2.0, a major research project by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), introduced by Professor Koen Vermeir from Global Young Academy and Head of Unit David Mair from the Joint Research Centre.

Minister of Culture of the Republic of Croatia Nina Obuljen Koržinek will explore the links between sustainable development and culture, and Kathrin Merkle from the Council of Europe will look at how culture can strengthen democracy.

Professor Bill Lucas from the University of Winchester, UK, and Todd Lubart from Descartes University, France, will consider the nature and measurement of creativity. In her address entitled All Our Futures? Culture and Creativity in Re-Inventing Democracy, Valerie Hannon from Innovation Unit, UK, will discuss future skills.

You can watch live streaming of the conference on YouTube. The conference will be held at Helsinki Music Centre in the centre of Helsinki.
