Prime Minister Sipilä will attend EU Summits in Brussels

Prime Minister Juha Sipilä will be in Brussels on Wednesday 17 October to attend the European Council meeting on the UK’s withdrawal from the EU and on Thursday 18 October to attend the European Council meeting and the Euro Summit. The Prime Minister will also take part the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Brussels on 18 and 19 October.

In the European Council (Art.50) working dinner on Wednesday, EU leaders in EU27 format will review the state of the Brexit process and whether conditions exist to call an extraordinary summit in November. On Thursday, the European Council will address migration and internal security. The meeting will review progress being made in the management of migration, as agreed in the June European Council conclusions. The Euro Summit will discuss the state of play of negotiations on the deepening of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). 

In the ASEM Summit on Friday, leaders of European and Asian countries will focus on the theme “Europe and Asia: global partners for global challenges”. They will seek to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the two continents on a wide range of areas, including trade and investment as well as sustainable development and mitigating climate change. In connection with the summit, Prime Minister Sipilä will also hold bilateral discussions with leaders of Asian countries.
