Press release 206/2015

Prime Minister Alexander Stubb will attend an extraordinary meeting of the European Council on 23 April in Brussels. The meeting will focus on the situation in the Mediterranean Sea and migration. In the last few days alone, several hundred people have died in the Mediterranean in trying to cross the sea from North Africa to Europe.

The EU leaders will seek ways to stop human traffickers who put people's lives at risk and to rescue people in need in the Mediterranean, improve cooperation with the countries of origin and support the EU members states that receive most migrants.

- The situation in the Mediterranean is dramatic. Europe needs to act together to overcome this serious challenge, Prime Minister Alexander Stubb says.
