Open house event at the House of the Estates on 25 August

The House of the Estates will host an open house event on Saturday 25 August from 10.00 to 14.00. The stately Neo-Renaissance building serves as a venue for meetings and official functions held by the Government and central government organisations, so it is seldom open to the general public. On Saturday, Government staff will be in the House of the Estates to talk about the building and its history and to answer questions. See you there!

The House of the Estates, designed by Architect Karl Gustav Nyström, was built between 1888 and 1890. It was inaugurated in 1891 as a venue for meetings for the three common estates during the Assembly of the Representatives of the Estates. After the implementation of a single chamber parliament in 1907, the House of the Estates became too small to accommodate the two hundred representatives of Parliament. Meetings of parliamentary committees were held in the building instead, which also housed the Library of Parliament until the new Parliament Building was completed in 1931. For the next half century, the building was known as the House of Learned Societies. In 1978, the administration of the House of the Estates was transferred to the Prime Minister's Office.

Visitor instructions

Open house event at the House of the Estates from 10.00 to 14.00 on Saturday 25 August. Entry from the main entrance at Snellmaninkatu 9-11, Helsinki. Accessible entrance for persons with reduced mobility from the right side of the building on Kirkkokatu 11-13 (press buzzer for entry).
