Press release 501/2017

In its plenary session today, 2 November, the Government endorsed a resolution on the Security Strategy for Society. The Strategy was last updated in 2010.

It outlines the general principles for preparedness in Finnish society. Comprehensive security is a Finnish cooperation model to create preparedness, where public authorities, businesses, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and citizens cooperate to secure the functions vital for society. Because of its exhaustive scope, the Finnish cooperation model for preparedness is an internationally unique solution.

The Strategy harmonises the set of national principles for preparedness and guides preparedness in the administrative branches. The Security Committee monitors the Strategy’s implementation and coordinates cooperation measures together with the ministries’ Heads of Preparedness.

In the Strategy, the content of seven functions vital to society have been updated and been given new headings. Functions vital to society reflect the wide scope of preparedness. Of all the functions, psychological crisis resilience has been highlighted as a cornerstone of security in society.

Security Strategy for Society (2017) (in Finnish and in Swedish)

An English version of the Strategy will be published as soon as possible.
