Finland continues its active work in order to improve global health security. Finland is chairing the international Joint External Evaluation Alliance (JEE) until October 2018. The Alliance supports the evaluation of health security of different countries and the implementation of International Health Regulations, and promotes the related development measures. Finland is also a member of the steering group of the Global Health Security Agenda GHSA, a global cooperative forum for health security.

Last year, the World Health Organization WHO took into use this new tool, Joint External Evaluation. So far, an evaluation has been carried out in 28 countries. The independent external evaluations help countries to detect, prevent and respond to health threats, for example communicable diseases.

The JEE process gives the countries independent, reliable information on their own health security. Finland participated in the development of the JEE tool and process.

JEE Alliance is a voluntary network supporting the country evaluations and long-term development of health security all over the world. In connection with their evaluations, the countries receive development proposals. On the basis of the proposals they will plan how to carry out the improvements. The Alliance also supports giving information about the country evaluations and plans to investors so that the countries can receive resources for the development of health security when needed.

Finland’s health security will be evaluated at the end of March.

Päivi Sillanaukee, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, will attend the health security meetings of the GHSA steering group and JEE Alliance which will be held in Geneva from 21 to 22 January.
