Minister Jari Leppä signed on 23 August an updated Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Forestry between the National Forestry Commission of the United Mexican States and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland.

In the occasion of signature, the Mexican Ambassador to Finland, Mr. Ernesto Céspedes, gave the following statement: “With the signature of this agreement between the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Mexico and Finland have decided to renew their long tradition of forestry cooperation. With this instrument, we are moving closer to a more productive, efficient and sustainable forest industry. We hope that this collaboration continues in the future.”

Minister Leppä stated that the cooperation with Mexico is also appreciated in Finland. It has been useful for the Finnish forestry professionals to know the conditions in other countries, especially when working in the multilateral contexts. It is also useful to have contacts and friends in other countries.

Bilateral forestry cooperation between Mexico and Finland has already continued 50 years, which is a remarkable result. It started as cooperation between universities and later on continued as collaboration between forestry organizations. The activities covered have been e.g. forest management planning, forest inventories, organization of private forest owners and preparation of the national forest program for Mexico, and later, implementation of this national forest program. A new program of work will be prepared now.
