Legal databank Finlex available as open data from 10 March

Publication date 4.3.2016 15.33
News item

Open data service of the Finnish legal databank Finlex, owned by the Ministry of Justice, will be launched on 10 March. Finlex is an online database of legal information, which is nowadays available only as a normal website. In the open data service, the essential material contained in Finlex will be available in machine-readable format that can be processed by other applications and information systems.

Making Finlex available as open data gives an opportunity to provide new kinds of services to citizens, public administration and businesses. This way, the information in the numerous legislation and case-law databases of Finlex may be made available through various channels, such as different mobile services, individualised information retrieval services and search portals.

The project is a part of a programme aiming to open up access to public sector information, implemented in cooperation between the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Finance, Aalto University and Edita Publishing Oy.

The development project is carried out in compliance with, among other things, the European ELI and ECLI metadata standards.

Welcome to launch seminar

The Finlex open data service will be launched in a seminar held at the House of the Estates on Thursday 10 March 2016.

The event is open to anyone interested in the development of open data. In connection with the launch, the first application demos developed in the data service will also be introduced. Some of these can be used also in the current Finlex databank.
