The Nordic energy ministers will hold a video conference on 26 May 2020 at the invitation of the Danish Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers. Ministers will discuss the development of Nordic energy cooperation and energy policy as a tool for green post-corona recovery. Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä will represent Finland at the meeting.

In the post-crisis recovery, Finland emphasises the need for support measures that promote long-term goals such as climate neutrality and competitiveness. Investing in sector integration, electrification and energy efficiency measures makes sense, even if the current economic conditions. Equally important is to invest in innovation and research.

In August 2019, the Nordic Prime Ministers adopted a new Vision 2030 for the Council of Ministers. The strategic priorities of the vision focus on creating a green, competitive and socially sustainable Nordic region. At the meeting of energy ministers, Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers Paula Lehtomäki will give a presentation on the topic. In the future, the vision and its objectives will serve as a guideline for sector-specific work.

At the meeting, energy ministers will discuss how the energy sector will contribute to the implementation of the vision. Special emphasis in the energy sector is placed on cooperation that drives climate neutrality objectives. Similarly, cooperation in the Nordic electricity market, renewable energy, energy research and EU and EEA issues will continue to be an integral part of the sector’s activities.

At the meeting, ministers are to adopt a declaration on the next steps in the Nordic electricity market and, more generally, in cooperation in the energy sector.

Finland to hold the Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2021

Finland will hold the Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2021. At the end of the meeting, Finland will provide preliminary information on the themes of its Presidency. These include exploring ways of promoting Nordic climate neutrality with sector integration while ensuring reliable energy supply. In all efforts to achieve climate neutrality, secure energy supply is vital for our societies that increasingly depend on uninterrupted supply of energy and electricity.
