Press release 53/2019

Macedonian Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs Bujar Osmani will visit Finland on Friday 1 February. Deputy Prime Minister Osmani will meet the Minister for European Affairs of Finland Sampo Terho to discuss Finland’s preparations for the Presidency of the Council of the EU and the enlargement agenda of the European Union. Finland supports the Macedonian convergence to the EU and encourages the country to continue along the path towards the reforms required for launching the accession negotiations.

Finland welcomes the solution to the dispute between Greece and Macedonia over the name of the country. The agreement on the name is a major achievement in terms of the West Balkan region as a whole. It also serves as proof how solutions can be found even to very difficult disputes.

Macedonia has been an official candidate to the EU since 2005. According to the decision by the General Affairs Council in June 2018, accession negotiations with Macedonia will be opened in June 2019 if all the conditions for this have been met.

Deputy Prime Minister Osmani will also meet State Secretary Samuli Virtanen and Chair of the Grand Committee of the Finnish Parliament Arto Satonen, and visit the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats in Helsinki.
