Press release 591/2019

At its evening session on 13 November 2019, the Government discussed the mandate for the truth and reconciliation commission concerning the Sámi people and decided to progress towards appointing the commissioners. The aim is to set up a five-member commission that would operate impartially and independently. The goal of the work of the new Sámi truth and reconciliation commission will be to investigate and learn from the events of history.

The mandate for the commission in Finland was prepared in 2019 in cooperation with the Sámi Parliament and the Skolt Village Assembly, which will also discuss the mandate in their meetings. The appointment process is scheduled to begin after these proceedings.
