The preparation of the National Strategy for Children has started. The aim is to produce a child-friendly and family-friendly vision that extends beyond government terms and combines different administrative sectors.

“Low birth rate, ageing of the population, poverty among families with children and intergenerational social exclusion are challenges to which we must find solutions. The National Strategy for Children is one way to respond to these challenges,” says Minister of Family Affairs and Social Services Krista Kiuru.

A parliamentary committee is set up for the preparation of the Strategy for Children. Johanna Laisaari, Master of Laws, starts as its Secretary-General on 1 October. She will draw up a situation picture of child and family policy and prepare the committee's work.

Strategy for Children is founded on children's rights and research data

The preparation of the Strategy for Children is based the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The main principle is that the strategy is founded on knowledge and research.

The aim is to make the goals of the strategy shared so that they will go beyond different administrative sectors. There will be broad-based commitment to the goals, ranging from the central government to other public authorities, particularly municipalities and joint municipal authorities, higher education institutions and education providers, organisations, parishes and the business community.

The preparation of the Strategy for Children will make use of the preparatory work carried out during the previous government term, which resulted in a vision for a child- and family-friendly Finland.
