International Energy Agency’s recommendations for Finland’s energy policy

Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment
Publication date 19.10.2018 10.33
Press release

The International Energy Agency (IEA) reviews its member countries’ energy policies every five years. This is the third time the IEA reviews Finland’s energy policy, and its In-depth Review will be published in Tampere on 23 October as part the World Energy Council’s Energy Day and the Energy 2018 event.

The IEA’s multinational review team visited Finland in November 2017. During one week, it met key players in the energy sector and held discussions with different authorities and operators, and with representatives of interest groups and non-governmental organisations.

The emphasis of the in-depth review this time has been on emissions reductions in sectors not included in the EU Emissions Trading System, especially transport, and the sustainable use of forest biomass and the future of combined heat and power production as part of the electricity sector’s transformation.

Based on the visit to Finland, the IEA and the review team have written an in-depth review report discussing the current state of Finland’s energy policy and providing recommendations on further policy actions.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment will host a launch event for the IEA’s In-Depth Review of Finland’s energy policy 2018 in Tampere Fair Centre on Tuesday 23 October 2018 at 14.30–16.20.

Deputy Executive Director Paul Simons from the IEA will present the recommendations of the In-depth Review, and Minister of the Environment, Energy and Housing Kimmo Tiilikainen will comment on the recommendations. Director General Riku Huttunen from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment will chair the event.

The event will be held in English. It will be webcast live and a recording may be viewed later at: https://tem.videosync.fi/energiapolitiikan-maatutkinnan-julkistus
