15.3.2026 | The Nordic countries and Canada agreed to intensify their cooperation at the Nordic-Canadian Summit in Oslo on Sunday 15 March.

15.4.2026 | Finland and Canada have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will strengthen their bilateral collaboration especially in marine industry and Arctic matters. The MoU was signed by Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto and Canada’s Minister of Industry Melanie Joly in Ottawa on 14 April 2026.

25.6.2026 | The Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy outlined on Finland’s additional funding package of EUR 40 million to the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative of NATO and the United States. The package is part of the commitment the Finnish Government agreed in its spring budget session to increase Finland’s military support to Ukraine by EUR 300 million in 2026–2027.

25.6.2026 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo represented Finland at the Ukraine Recovery Conference and the Eastern Flank Summit in the Polish city of Gdańsk on Thursday 25 June.

16.2.2026 | Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen is currently visiting Canada and the United States. The visit is part of Finland’s long-term goal to intensify strategic cooperation and collaboration on skills and expertise with North America. Another purpose is to find sustainable solutions for the development, availability and opportunities for skilled labour in the marine industry together with partner countries.

22.6.2026 | Labour migration models used in different countries were examined in a report by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. A points-based system has been implemented and is being used in different ways in different countries. Introducing such a system in Finland would require the setting of a clear objective.

20.10.2025 | Finnish Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio will travel to the Province of Ontario, Canada, on 20–23 October 2025. During his visit, the Minister will visit Toronto and the country’s capital Ottawa.

19.11.2025 | On 18 November, Finland, the United States and Canada signed a trilateral Joint Statement of Intent (JSOI) confirming support for the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE) Pact, launched in autumn 2024. The JSOI was signed in Washington DC by Sakari Puisto, the Finnish Minister of Economic Affairs, Kristi Noem, the United States Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, and Kirsten Hillman, Canada’s Ambassador to the United States.

4.5.2026 | National coordinators of the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE Pact) from Canada, Finland and the United States will meet in Helsinki on 5–7 May 2026. Finland will host a three-day meeting for the countries’ government representatives to advance the goals related to icebreaker construction and Arctic cooperation.

13.11.2025 | Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden announced today on 13 November 2025 that they will fund a USD 500 million package of defence materiel for Ukraine sourced from the United States, under the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative of NATO and the United States.

10.3.2026 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will take part in a Nordic-Canadian summit in Oslo on Sunday 15 March. Hosted by Norway, the summit will bring together the prime ministers of all the Nordic countries and Canada.

8.5.2026 | EU foreign affairs ministers will convene for a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on 11 May.

27.4.2026 | Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen will attend the OECD’s Skills Summit in Istanbul on 27–28 April 2026. He will meet the employment ministers of Türkiye and the United Kingdom, among others.

13.11.2024 | New trilateral arrangement formalizes collaboration on the production of Arctic and polar icebreakers

4.5.2026 | Prime Minister Orpo represented Finland at the eighth summit of the European Political Community (EPC) in the Armenian capital of Yerevan on Monday 4 May. The theme of the summit was building the future through unity and stability in Europe.

27.3.2026 | On 27 March 2026, Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen denied six prospective buyers from outside the EU and EEA a permit to buy real estate in Finland.

11.2.2026 | Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto is pleased with the icebreaker agreement between the United States Coast Guard and the Helsinki shipyard published today. The Coast Guard and the Rauma shipyard announced their agreement already on 29 December 2025. With the agreements, the building of four icebreakers will begin at the shipyards in Helsinki and Rauma.

26.3.2026 | The Ministry for Foreign Affairs will continue to reform its network of diplomatic missions by establishing a consulate in Munich, where Business Finland formerly had an office.

25.11.2024 | Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sari Essayah visits Canada with a delegation of the Finnish forestry and bioeconomy actors on 24–28 November. Minister Essayah will deliver the keynote speech at the Scaling Up Bioeconomy Conference 2024 in Ottawa. Finland is the Feature Country of this year’s conference. In addition, the Minister and the business delegation will visit the province of Quebec.

24.3.2026 | Finland has joined the US-led Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) programme as a contributing partner. Led by the State Department’s Bureau of Arms Control and Nonproliferation (ACN), FIRST harnesses the power of the nuclear industry to expedite responsible nuclear reactor deployment worldwide.

14.11.2025 | Finnish Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto will visit Washington DC on 17–18 November to attend an ICE Pact Principals Meeting between Finland, the United States and Canada, the partner countries in the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE Pact). After the Principals Meeting, a meeting of national coordinators and working groups and an Industry Day event will take place in Washington DC on 19–20 November.

3.3.2026 | Finland has joined the Global Coalition on Telecommunications (GCOT) in connection with the Barcelona Mobile World Congress. The congress also saw the release of the GCOT’s principles for security and resilience in 6G, which Finland supports.

29.12.2025 | Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto is pleased with the agreement on icebreaker cooperation between the United States Coast Guard and the Rauma shipyard, according to which two icebreakers will be built at the shipyard. Negotiations between the Coast Guard and the Helsinki shipyard are also likely to be concluded in the near future, bringing the number of icebreakers to be built in Finland up to four.

4.3.2024 | Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman will lead a Team Finland visit to Canada and the US on 5–8 March 2024. The main themes of the visit will be marine industry and ports. A business delegation of 30 people from 20 different companies and organisations will participate in the trip.

19.11.2025 | A report of the Independent International Panel on Arbitrary detention in State-to-State Relations was published in New York on 28 October. Ambassador Marja Lehto served as the Vice-Chair of the Panel.

4.12.2025 | The economy of wellbeing offers tools for policy makers to secure the preconditions for a good life both for the current population and future generations. A new working paper by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) analyses how wellbeing economy practices have been integrated into decision-making in ten countries. This comparison will also help Finland create its own governance model.

5.2.2024 | Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio will lead a trade mission to the province of Nova Scotia in Canada and visit the country’s capital, Ottawa, on 5–8 February.

25.2.2026 | Security policy topics, which have dominated international coverage on Finland since 2022, continued as the key theme in 2025. The number of news headlines about Finland was lower than the previous year, but President of the Republic Alexander Stubb assumed a significantly more visible role on the international stage. Country brand surveys indicate that Finland’s brand has become more positive, and awareness of Finland has increased since 2024.

18.8.2025 | Finland is holding the Presidency of the Nordic (N5) cooperation on foreign and security policy in 2025. Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen has invited the Nordic foreign ministers to a meeting on Nordic cooperation on foreign and security policy in Espoo on 18–19 August. Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand has been invited to the meeting.

28.11.2025 | Finnish Biodiversity Award 2023–2024 was given to an actor that had done something inspiring to halt biodiversity loss. The winner of the competition was Crowdsorsa mobile game that has already helped fight against invasive alien species in Finland on a total of 4 million square metres. Honourable mentions were awarded to the cities of Kauniainen and Vantaa. The prizes were awarded by Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.

26.11.2025 | A preliminary study, commissioned by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, urges Finland to consider creating a national manual on the law of armed conflict. The study was supported by a group of experts from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Finnish defence administration and the Finnish Red Cross.

11.1.2024 | The Youth Mobility Agreement allows Canadian and Finnish young people aged 18 to 35 to explore the other country through temporary work and travel. The agreement enters into force on 1 March 2024.

13.6.2025 | Representatives from Canada, Finland and the United States met to discuss the next steps in the ICE Pact collaboration to build Arctic and polar icebreakers.

12.11.2025 | The Sports Ministers of 33 countries and the European Commission have expressed their grave concern about the decision of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) in September to discontinue the partial suspensions of the National Paralympic Committees of Belarus and Russia from the Paralympic Games.

5.11.2025 | Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen signed an updated Comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (CMOU) of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) participant nations on behalf of Finland on Wednesday 5 November. The signing took place at a meeting of JEF defence ministers in Norway.
