26.6.2026 | In its meeting on Friday 26 June, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined its positions on the new package of sanctions proposed by the Commission and the External Action Service in response to Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. The 21st sanctions package expands personal and entity sanctions, sectoral sanctions and sanctions against Belarus. Finland supports the sanctions.

The aim of terminology work at the Prime Minister's Office is to harmonise the terms used in government texts, both in the national languages of Finland and in foreign languages, and to promote clear communication. 17.6.2026 | On Wednesday 17 June, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions for the European Council meeting at the end of this week. The Ministerial Committee also discussed ways to use the European Peace Facility (EPF) to support Ukraine, Commission Communication on fertilisers and reform of the merger control rules.

25.6.2026 | The Government has submitted a government proposal for legislation on police criminal intelligence to Parliament. The proposal includes an amendment to the Police Act that would introduce provisions on criminal intelligence methods and their use in threat‑informed criminal intelligence. It would also strengthen the police’s secret intelligence collection powers used to prevent and detect individual offences.

21.5.2026 | The Act on Healthcare Professionals has been amended to make it possible to receive international assistance for healthcare in different kinds of crises. The amendments will facilitate and speed up the operations of humanitarian assistance providers in Finland when assistance is needed fast. The amendments will enter into force on 25 May 2026.

The Translation and Language Division of the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office has published a new edition of the NATO Glossary with nearly a hundred new concepts and their translations. A team of language specialists is working to extend the glossary in consultation with experts. The glossary gives recommendations for the Finnish and Swedish equivalents of English names, titles and terms used in the NATO context.

21.5.2026 | In its meeting on Wednesday 20 May, the parliamentary research, development and innovation (RDI) monitoring group discussed the role of RDI in the renewal of the public sector. The monitoring group received briefings from experts from the Defence Forces, wellbeing services counties and the healthcare sector.

13.4.2026 | The Finnish call-up process will have two parts in the future. The first part will be a call-up information day for the whole age group, providing young people with more information about homeland defence. The second part, the call-up day proper, will be organised later for men liable for military service and for women applying for voluntary military service. The call-up information day will be piloted in Espoo, Iisalmi and Jyväskylä in autumn 2026.

15.5.2026 | In the early hours of Friday 15 May, the Finnish Defence Forces received information about a risk that drones larger than previously sighted and carrying heavier explosive payloads could stray into Finland. For this reason, the Ministry of the Interior issued an emergency warning for the Uusimaa region as a precautionary measure shortly before 4.00.

23.4.2026 | Russia is waging a war of aggression in Ukraine for the fifth year and has not demonstrated a genuine willingness to negotiate for a lasting peace. Russia’s ruthless strikes on civilian targets highlight the need to tighten sanctions. With its 20th sanctions package, the European Union continues to increase pressure on Russia to weaken the country’s ability to pursue its war of aggression against Ukraine.

16.12.2025 | Eight EU Member States stressed the importance of significantly strengthening security at Europe’s eastern external border at the Eastern Flank Summit in Helsinki on 16 December. The Member States on the EU’s eastern flank called for the Union’s support in building credible and united defence capabilities along the border with Russia from north to south. The summit at the House of the Estates was hosted by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.

4.5.2026 | The Ministry of the Interior has launched a project to develop guidance for the public on how to prepare for emergency conditions. The guidance will complement existing preparedness advice in the Preparing for Incidents and Crises guide published on Suomi.fi.

12.3.2026 | The Finnish Security and Intelligence Service and military intelligence authorities will be able to disclose information on offences to other authorities more extensively than before. In its session on 12 March, the Government proposed that the President of the Republic approve the bills concerned on 13 March. The amendments will enter into force on 20 March 2026.

14.4.2026 | The Ministry of the Interior has sent out for comments a draft government proposal to update civilian intelligence legislation in response to the changed security environment.  The proposal would introduce new powers, including measures to prepare for state-sponsored threats, and clarifying amendments arising from practical needs identified in intelligence activities. Changes are also proposed to the non-disclosure periods for documents. The deadline for submitting comments is in late May.

22.12.2025 | The timing and content of health checks at child health clinics and schools, and in student healthcare and oral healthcare will be regulated in future by government decree. 3.12.2025 | Brigadier General Matti Honko, an officer of the Finnish Defence Forces, will serve on special assignment as adviser to the commander of the 10th Mountain Division of the United States Army as of 1 December 2025.

18.6.2026 | Finland’s Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen authorised the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command to procure GBU-53 Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB II) glide bombs from the United States. Glide bombs are used in F-35 multi-role combat aircraft.
