4.5.2026 | Prime Minister Orpo represented Finland at the eighth summit of the European Political Community (EPC) in the Armenian capital of Yerevan on Monday 4 May. The theme of the summit was building the future through unity and stability in Europe.

7.5.2026 | Based on the 2025 hydrogen auction of its Innovation Fund, the European Commission has selected nine projects that will proceed to agreement negotiations. Among them is the Cloudberry project of Finland’s Vetyalfa Oy. The Commission published the results of the auction on 7 May 2026.

22.1.2026 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will visit Beijing, China, on 25–28 January. On Tuesday 27 January, Prime Minister Orpo will meet with President of China Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Li Qiang, who is hosting the official visit, and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhao Leji. The purpose of the visit is to continue dialogue with the Chinese leadership and to promote business opportunities for Finland in China.

16.6.2026 | President of the United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Alvaro Lario will visit Helsinki on 16–17 June. The topics on the agenda are Finland’s cooperation with IFAD and global food security.

12.2.2026 | On 12 February 2026, the Government submitted three communications concerning proposals included in the European Commission’s Automotive Package to Parliament. On 30 January 2026, the Government also submitted a Europe communication regarding the Commission’s proposal to amend the EU Regulation on the CO2 emissions standards for heavy-duty vehicles.

15.12.2025 | The EU environment ministers will meet in Brussels on Tuesday 16 December. The ministers will exchange views on the new EU Bioeconomy Strategy published by the Commission on 27 November. The agenda also includes conclusions on the EU’s 8th environment action programme. Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will represent Finland at the meeting.

24.11.2025 | The Nordic Baltic Youth Summit will be held in Finland for the first time. The summit participants will draft policy recommendations addressing challenges related to the green transition and youth employment and submit them to Minister of Youth, Sport and Physical Activity Mika Poutala.

6.10.2025 | Biodiversity is declining in Europe. Emissions have been reduced, but the pace is not fast enough. The recent report of the European Environment Agency EEA explores the state of the environment in Europe, including Finland’s challenges and success stories. The report stresses that, in the end, all human activities depend on nature.

24.10.2025 | Finland’s circular economy solutions and active role in developing nature funding for companies were strongly highlighted at the European Business & Nature Summit 2025 in Helsinki. In connection with the event, Minister Multala met Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall and Eric Mamer, Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment.

4.11.2025 | On 3 November 2025, the European Commission announced that 61 projects had been selected for funding under the latest Innovation Fund call for net-zero technologies. The projects will receive a total of EUR 2.9 billion in support. Five Finnish projects are among those selected: NotNukeOne, SCOOP, MAGHYC, NEXT HYDROMET and SB-VARKAUS.

10.12.2025 | A new OECD report, prepared at the request of the European Commission, sets out a roadmap to strengthen resilience, competitiveness and security in Finland’s eastern border regions. The report was launched in Helsinki on 10 December.

26.5.2025 | On Monday 26 May, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sari Essayah and two Members of the European Commission opened the New Wood exhibition in Brussels where Finland showcases bioeconomy solutions based on wood and the country’s strong competence and skills.

23.5.2025 | The OECD sees vast potential for clean economic growth in Finland. However, structural reforms will be required to realise this potential. Among other things, the OECD recommends that Finland boost higher education, attract high-skilled immigrants and improve incentives for investments. Further adjustments to public finances are necessary due to rising defence spending.

17.3.2025 | The impacts of both climate change and biodiversity loss can be seen in the daily lives of most Finns. This is the conclusion to be made from the answers to the 2025 Climate and Nature Barometers. In municipal policy green investments are identified as sources of vitality, but opinions diverge with respect to their environmental impacts. Climate solutions are considered to boost Finland’s competitiveness.

5.3.2025 | On Wednesday 5 March, the Government held a more detailed discussion on the Room for Growth working group’s proposals to boost economic growth in Finland. The members of the Government split up into small groups chaired by the leaders of the government parties to discuss the different themes of the report: people, competencies and skills; operating conditions for growth companies; the energy market and the clean, green transition; and the defence industry.

11.4.2025 | On Friday 11 April, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs discussed the ReArm Europe Plan, measures to simplify EU regulation, the state aid framework in the Clean Industrial Deal and the ‘stop-the-clock’ proposal, which is part of the Commission’s Omnibus I package.

30.10.2024 | Finland and Saudi Arabia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on energy. It aims to enhance technical and economic cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector and promote the access of Finnish companies to the Saudi Arabian market.

28.6.2024 | On 24 June, the Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy decided that the Ministry of Finance would continue preparing a tax subsidy for large industrial investments that promote the clean transition. This tax subsidy would accelerate investments in the green transition.

27.6.2025 | The clean energy transition is progressing at a good pace, thanks in part to the emissions trading system. However, reaching Finland’s climate targets will require more action in the effort sharing sector, and especially in the land use sector where emissions increased compared to the previous year.

7.6.2024 | The European Investment Fund (EIF) has finalised agreements with eight leading banks and financial institutions in Finland to assist small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), small mid-caps and housing companies. The agreements will facilitate around €1 billion in lending to invest in projects that promote Finland’s climate objectives and environmental sustainability.

30.10.2024 | By summer 2023, only three years had passed since the publication of the sectoral low-carbon roadmaps in 2020. A provision in Petteri Orpo’s government program from June 2023 mandated the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and various sectors to revisit the roadmaps in light of the evolving operating environment. With this mandate, the update process began in autumn 2023. By autumn 2024, all 14 participating sectors had completed their updates.

19.12.2024 | Finland is preparing a country pavilion for the next UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Belém, Brazil, from 10 to 21 November 2025. The Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs support the preparation of the pavilion in cooperation with companies, municipalities, universities and non-governmental organisations.

16.1.2024 | An adequate number of companies have made the committed to the Green Deal agreement on single-use plastic portion packs. This year, companies will define ambitious reduction targets for their own operations. In Finland further measures are needed to achieve the recycling targets set in the EU for plastic packaging waste.

26.4.2024 | According to the joint statement of the For Forest group composed of four forested countries of the European Union, a sustainable bioeconomy must be at the core of the next European Commission’s Work Programme. A total of 16 EU Member States have joined the statement of Finland, Sweden, Austria and Slovenia to be discussed at the Agriculture and Fisheries Council on Monday 29 April.

12.4.2024 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and other EU Heads of State or Government met for a discussion on the next EU Strategic Agenda on Thursday 11 April in Warsaw. In addition to Orpo, the Prime Ministers of Estonia, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Poland and Spain attended the dinner meeting.

These are the main objectives of the new state-owner’s sustainability programme, which identifies the sustainability themes most critical to the State's company portfolio and sets portfolio-level objectives and indicators for them.

9.12.2025 | A delegation of Finnish Members of Parliament from the Development Policy Committee visited Zambia on 22–28 November to discuss with the country’s political leadership the development of cooperation between Finland and Zambia and to learn about topical development issues in the country.

13.3.2023 | At their meeting on 13 March, the EU social affairs and employment ministers will discuss the labour market situation of temporarily displaced Ukrainians and the situation of children. The ministers will also exchange views on the European Semester for economic policy coordination and the related sustainable growth survey and joint employment report.
