17.12.2025 | The organisation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry will be reformed, with the new organisational structure taking effect in the beginning of 2026. The reform was based on the Ministry’s strategy, where the aim is that Finland will be a leading country in a sustainable bioeconomy by 2035.

11.2.2026 | The demand for skilled labour in the maritime industry is growing. Competence requirements in the sector, especially for highly skilled tasks, are changing. This is the conclusion of a report on the skills needs of the maritime industry published by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment on 11 February 2026.

12.2.2026 | “Today we are creating a foundation for the future to develop an energy system that can meet the demands of a new era. This plant is a concrete result of purposeful research and planning,” said Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala at the groundbreaking ceremony for Steady Energy Oy’s small nuclear pilot plant in Salmisaari, Helsinki on 12 February 2026.

5.3.2026 | Finland’s Ministry of Defence will circulate for comments a draft government proposal to amend the Nuclear Energy Act and the Criminal Code.

18.3.2026 | In its meeting on Wednesday 18 March, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions for the European Council meeting on 19–20 March and the Euro Summit to be held in connection with it. The ministerial committee also discussed the agenda for the next meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council, which will focus on trade.

3.2.2021 | The Digivision 2030, a joint project between Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences, will bring greater opportunities for all learners to learn flexibly. The aim is to restructure Finland’s higher education over the next decade by means of digitalisation and to make Finland a model country for flexible learning.

26.11.2025 | The Ministerial Council of the European Space Agency (ESA) will meet in Bremen, Germany, on 26–27 November 2025. The Council will decide on ESA’s funding for 2026–2028 and the preliminary financial guidelines for 2029–2030. Finland will be represented by Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto.

12.11.2025 | Finland hosted NATO’s first Arctic Space Forum in Helsinki on 12 November 2025. In his opening address, Finland’s Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen said that Finland will start building satellite cooperation together with Allies.

27.8.2025 | Finland needs more exports, investments and ambitious R&D activities to boost our economy.

29.9.2025 | The EU’s Competitiveness Council will be held in Brussels on 29–30 September 2025. Finland will be represented by Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen (internal market and industrial policy matters) and Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto (research and innovation matters).

13.10.2025 | To support the preparation of the project "Security and new economic growth from information networks" (TUUTTI), the Ministry of Transport and Communications invited comments on the project's key needs and themes. The consultation was open from 19 June to 31 August 2025.  On 13 October 2025, the Ministry published a summary of the 33 comments received.

29.10.2025 | As part of the lecture series "Raffles lecture" at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in Singapore Minister Elina Valtonen delivered the following speech on 28th October 2025.

24.11.2025 | The Assembly of the International Maritime Organization IMO will meet in London from 24 November to 3 December 2025. Finland is a candidate for re-election as a member of the IMO Council. The Assembly will vote on the members of the new Council on Friday 28 November 2025.

30.9.2025 | Almost 200 persons and eight organisations participated in the national cyber exercise of the security authorities organised at the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (Jamk) on 22–26 September 2025.

17.10.2025 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen outlining Finland’s EU policy objectives with regard to security and defence. In the letter, Prime Minister Orpo called for quick, resolute action to strengthen European defence and enhance security at the eastern border.

10.10.2025 | Finland and the United States have signed a memorandum of understanding on icebreaker cooperation. Finnish President Alexander Stubb and US President Donald Trump signed the memorandum of understanding at their meeting in Washington on 9 October. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo also attended the meeting. This memorandum of understanding lays the foundation for commercial agreements between the United States Coast Guard and Finnish companies.

21.5.2025 | The EU’s Competitiveness Council will be held in Brussels on 22–23 May 2025. Finland will be represented by Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen (internal market and industrial policy matters) and Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman (research, innovation and space matters).

4.7.2025 | The European Commission plans to support the establishment of AI gigafactories across EU Member States. From Finland, technology leader Nokia, along with a business consortium it has assembled, has stepped forward with an expression of interest to bring an AI gigafactory to the country and has taken part in the Commission’s call. The Finnish Government backs the expression of interest submitted by the business consortium led by Nokia.

9.5.2025 | The topics on the agenda include the joint European degree label and the role of education in preventing inequality. The Council will also discuss the impact of disinformation, manipulation and cyber threats on young people and delve into the future strategic priorities for the cultural sector in the EU. Council conclusions are expected on the promotion of sport and physical activity in the educational context.

20.11.2025 | On Thursday 20 November, the Government submitted its proposal to Parliament to amend the budget proposal for 2026. It includes proposals to launch new transport projects and to support Ukraine. The proposal will decrease the revenue estimate by EUR 189 million and increase the requirement for appropriations by EUR 455 million.

17.6.2025 | On 17 June 2025, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published the national 6G roadmap to promote sixth-generation communications technologies. The roadmap sets milestones for the development and implementation of next-generation mobile communication technologies in the 2030s.

24.4.2025 | Quantum technology promises an unprecedented leap in computing power, telecommunication security and sensor ability to measure physical quantities. According to Finland’s quantum technology strategy published on 24th April 2025, resources are necessary for the research and development of these technologies and their application and the time to invest in them is now.

27.3.2025 | Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand will represent Finland at the EU General Affairs Council meeting on cohesion issues in Brussels on Friday 28 March. At the meeting, the ministers will hold an exchange of views on how to build a more dynamic and strategic cohesion policy in the current and next work periods.

4.12.2025 | The economy of wellbeing offers tools for policy makers to secure the preconditions for a good life both for the current population and future generations. A new working paper by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) analyses how wellbeing economy practices have been integrated into decision-making in ten countries. This comparison will also help Finland create its own governance model.

According to the report, Finland must improve the competitiveness of its investment environment by predictable regulation and sufficient incentives. Companies must increase their intangible investments to enhance productivity and the value added. Public funding must be used more efficiently to boost new sectors and diversify the economic structure.

2.9.2025 | The Government of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has reached a decision on its budget proposal for 2026. The Government’s decisions aim to support economic growth, which is picking up. Supporting economic growth and continuing responsible fiscal management is necessary to ensure the security of people in Finland and safeguard their access to important services going forward.

10.6.2025 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo held an AI roundtable, at which participants discussed the EU’s AI gigafactory initiative and measures to strengthen the Finnish Government’s coordination of AI policy. Finland intends to pursue the establishment of an AI gigafactory in Finland.

3.3.2025 | Helsinki Roundtable on AI and International Security, an event to be held at Aalto University on 13 March 2025, will bring together international experts, decision-makers and business leaders to discuss the impacts of artificial intelligence on global security.

12.2.2026 | The health status of people in Finland is in many respects better than the EU average, and the service system is fairly comprehensive. However, a recent country report by the OECD and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies indicates that access to care is not realised equally in Finland. In 2024, 12.4% of those who required medical care reported that they had not received the services they needed. The share is the second highest in the EU.

4.12.2024 | In its meeting on Wednesday 4 December, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs agreed on Finland’s positions on the deliberations for the EU pharmaceutical package. The Ministerial Committee on also outlined Finland’s positions for next week’s council meetings.

5.2.2026 | On Thursday 5 February, the Government submitted a supplementary budget proposal for 2026 to Parliament. The supplementary budget focuses on boosting growth and investments with the goal of supporting employment. The proposal also includes a decrease to revenue estimates.

5.12.2024 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will visit Japan on 9–12 December. The purpose of the visit is to deepen cooperation between Finland and Japan, to discuss the current foreign and security policy situation and to strengthen contacts between Finnish and Japanese businesses. A business delegation put together by Business Finland will accompany the Prime Minister on the visit.

6.11.2024 | It its meeting on Wednesday 6 November, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions for the informal meeting of the members of the European Council on 8 November and the meeting of the European Political Community to be held in connection with it on 7 November. The Ministerial Committee on EU Affairs also discussed the EU’s multiannual financial framework and migration issues.

27.11.2025 | At its plenary session on 27 November 2025, the Finnish Government appointed Janne Kuusela as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence for the period from 1 February 2026 to 31 January 2031.

8.11.2024 | In its informal meeting on 8 November in Budapest, Hungary, the European Council adopted a declaration highlighting the need to strengthen the EU’s economy and competitiveness. The leaders of the EU Member States also discussed EU-US relations and the situation in Georgia. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo represented Finland at the meeting.

23.4.2025 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government has agreed on the General Government Fiscal Plan for 2026–2029. The decisions focus on reinforcing the conditions for economic growth and enhancing the security of Finland and the Finnish people. At the same time, the Government will ensure that public finances are sustainable. The growth package will be financed responsibly through measures to increase general government revenue and reduce expenditure.

1.2.2024 | The Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) will replace the experimental cowshed in Minkiö, Jokioinen with a new one. The planning of the project and competitive tendering and planning the implementation of the construction work will be carried out during 2024. The construction of the new cowshed will take place in 2025 and the aim is to take it into use by the end of the year. 

29.8.2024 | On 29 August 2024, the Government appointed a new Board for the National Nuclear Waste Management Fund for the term of 1 September 2024–31 August 2027. The chair of the new Board will be Chief Risk Officer Jarkko Heikkilä from the Elo Mutual Pension Insurance Company.
