22.12.2024 | In a meeting hosted by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo in Saariselkä, Lapland on 21–22 December, a group of EU leaders held extensive discussions on Europe’s security challenges. The North-South Summit brought together perspectives from northern and southern Europe, especially with regard to security and migration.

22.5.2024 | Permanent Secretary Minna Kivimäki will attend the Summit of the International Transport Forum (ITF) in Leipzig, Germany, on 22 and 23 May 2024. The main theme of the summit is keeping the focus on the environment in times of crisis.  

19.12.2025 | In a meeting that began on Thursday 18 December, the EU leaders reached an agreement on significant additional funding for Ukraine. In line with the agreement, the European Council will provide a EUR 90 billion loan to Ukraine for 2026 and 2027.

25.11.2024 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will represent Finland at a summit of Nordic and Baltic heads of state or government on 27–28 November at the Swedish Prime Minister’s summer residence at Harpsund. Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk has also been invited to the meeting.

18.3.2026 | The EU heads of state and government will meet for the European Council in Brussels on Thursday 19 March. Discussions at the meeting will focus on recent developments in the Middle East, the situation in Ukraine, European competitiveness and the single market, defence and security, and the EU’s multiannual financial framework for 2028−2034. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will represent Finland at the meeting.

6.5.2025 | On Tuesday 6 May, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed the current situation in Ukraine and proposals to achieve peace and bring an end to Russia’s illegal war of aggression.

20.3.2024 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will attend the European Council on 21–22 March and the Euro Summit to be held in connection with the Council meeting. On 21 March, the Prime Minister will also attend the first-ever Nuclear Energy Summit.

21.3.2024 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo attended the Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels on Thursday 21 March. The Summit was held to promote the use of nuclear energy globally. The prime ministers and energy ministers in attendance highlighted the role of nuclear energy in reducing the use of fossil fuels and enhancing energy security.

16.12.2025 | In its meeting on Tuesday 16 December, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions for the European Council and the EU-Western Balkans summit taking place this week. The ministerial committee also discussed support for Ukraine and the use of frozen Russian assets to finance a reparations loan for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

21.11.2025 | In its meeting on Friday 21 November, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs discussed Finland’s proactive efforts to influence EU policy in 2026 and took stock of the success of advance influence efforts in 2025. Other topics on the agenda included promoting defence readiness, the proposal for the EU’s next multiannual financial framework, asylum and migration policy and the EU-African Union Summit.

7.10.2025 | Minister of Youth, Sport and Physical Activity Mika Poutala will attend the 10th Council of Europe Conference of Ministers responsible for Youth on 8–10 October. At the meeting, the ministers will assess developments in youth policy in light of the Reykjavík Declaration and agree on future priorities. The aim is for the ministers to adopt a final declaration and commit to a framework on a youth perspective within the Council of Europe.

19.9.2025 | The high-level meetings of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 80) will start in New York on 22 September 2025. Finland’s delegation will be led by President of the Republic Alexander Stubb, who will deliver Finland’s statement at the general debate on 24 September. 20.3.2024 | In its meeting on Wednesday 20 March, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions for the European Council meeting and the Euro Summit to be held in connection with it. The Ministerial Committee also discussed Bosnia and Herzegovina’s path to EU membership, as well as the reform of the Habitats Directive and the Bern Convention.

30.10.2025 | The world countries will convene at the Climate Change Conference COP30 in Belém, Brazil on 10–21 November. The countries are required to update their Nationally Determined Contributions every five years, and the next round of submissions is due just ahead the conference.

22.5.2025 | Ukraine held a Ministerial Social Policy Summit in Lviv on 22 May. The theme of the Summit was ‘Building Resilient Societies: Innovative Solutions for Demographic Change’. The Summit also issued a joint communiqué, in which the participating countries expressed their support for Ukraine and Moldova on their path towards joining the European Union.

24.11.2025 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo is of the view that the negotiations between Ukraine and the United States in Geneva have moved the Ukraine peace plan in the right direction. On Monday 24 November, Prime Minister Orpo attended an informal meeting of EU leaders on the status of the peace negotiations.

24.10.2025 | The European Council agreed on further measures to strengthen European defence and security in its meeting on 23 October in Brussels. The EU heads of state or government also discussed the use of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine in the form of a reparations loan. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo represented Finland at the meeting.

5.7.2024 | On Friday 5 July, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy assessed the status of preparations for the NATO Summit following ministerial meetings and discussed Finland’s continuing support for Ukraine, which is defending itself against Russia's illegal war of aggression.

18.6.2024 | In their meeting on Tuesday 18 June, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy finalised the Government Report on Finnish Foreign and Security Policy, which will now be submitted to Parliament once it has been endorsed in the Government plenary session.

13.7.2023 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will attend a summit bringing together the leaders of the EU Member States and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). The summit will take place in Brussels on 17 and 18 July.

20.10.2025 | The EU heads of state or government will meet for the European Council on 23 October in Brussels. The meeting will focus on support for Ukraine, efforts to strengthen European defence, the EU’s competitiveness and the clean transition, the Middle East, migration and housing. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will represent Finland at the meeting.

25.10.2023 | In its meeting on 25 October, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs decided on Finland’s positions for the October European Council and Euro Summit and outlined the Government’s priorities for the European Commission’s 2024 work programme.

4.12.2025 | Minister for Foreign Affairs of Finland Elina Valtonen hosted an informal meeting with the Foreign Ministers of the Nordic and Central Asian countries on the sidelines of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Ministerial Council in Vienna on 4 December 2025. The meeting brought together ministers or their representatives from Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

11.11.2025 | NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska will meet Finland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen during her visit to Helsinki on 12 November.

28.11.2025 | Finland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen will attend a meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Brussels on 3 December.

31.5.2023 | On 1 June, Prime Minister Sanna Marin will attend the European Political Community (EPC) Summit in Chisinau, Moldova.

24.8.2023 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo visited Kyiv on Wednesday 23 August. There, he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk. Prime Minister Orpo also attended the third Crimea Platform Summit hosted by President Zelenskyy, where discussions highlighted the status of Crimea as part of Ukraine.

22.10.2025 | The meeting of the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs on Wednesday 22 October focused on the October European Council and the Euro Summit, the next multiannual EU budget and next week's Agriculture and Fisheries Council.

21.5.2025 | A meeting between EU and African Union (AU) foreign ministers will be held in Brussels on 21 May. State Secretary Pasi Rajala will represent Finland at the meeting. This year marks the 25th anniversary of multilateral relations between the EU and the African Union.

6.11.2023 | Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman will attend the Space Summit 2023 in Spain’s Seville on 6–7 November 2023. The event will bring together European space operators. An informal meeting of the EU Competitiveness Council, an informal ministerial meeting of the European Space Agency (ESA) and an informal joint meeting of the EU and ESA will be held in connection with the summit.

21.3.2025 | Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne attended the European Shipping Summit seminar in Brussels on 20 March 2025. The seminar brought together European and international decision-makers, authorities and actors in the shipping industry.

1.12.2023 | The UN Climate Change Conference COP28 began on Friday with a two-day summit of heads of state and government. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo is representing Finland at the summit and will deliver Finland’s national address on Saturday.

5.11.2025 | Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen signed an updated Comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (CMOU) of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) participant nations on behalf of Finland on Wednesday 5 November. The signing took place at a meeting of JEF defence ministers in Norway.

The meeting will begin with a discussion between the EU leaders and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

17.10.2023 | Finland’s Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio will attend the School Meals Coalition Global Summit in Paris on Wednesday 18 October. Finland and France are co-chairs of the School Meals Coalition, and Minister Tavio is the Global Champion for School Meals. The French President Emmanuel Macron will open the summit.

1.6.2023 | The heads of state or government of the EU Member States and 20 other European countries met for the European Political Community (EPC) Summit in Moldova on 1 June. The EPC Summit focused on three themes: security, energy and strengthening connections between the participating countries.

13.2.2025 | Minister Anna-Kaisa Ikonen represented Finland at the World Governments Summit in the United Arab Emirates. At the event, the Suomi.fi service won the Govtech Prize for Best Government Service in the World.

The meeting will discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between the EU and the Western Balkan countries while also taking into account the impacts of Russia’s war of aggression on the region.

30.10.2024 | Minister of Education Anders Adlercreutz will attend the 2024 Global Education Meeting (GEM) organised by UNESCO in Fortaleza, Brazil, on 31 October and 1 November 2024. Brazil is hosting the meeting as part of its G20 Presidency. The meeting will examine strategies needed to achieve the SDG4 Education 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and is expected to adopt the Fortaleza Declaration by the ministers.

13.12.2022 | In its meeting today, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions for the European Council on 15 December and the EU-ASEAN summit on 14 December, both of which will take place in Brussels. The Ministerial Committee was also briefed on the use of funds frozen as a result of sanctions against Russia to support the reconstruction of Ukraine.

Items on the agenda at the meeting of the EU heads of state or government will include support for Ukraine, growing tensions in the Middle East, European defence and security, and strengthening the EU’s competitiveness. Support for Ukraine will continue and measures to strengthen European defence will be accelerated.
