15.9.2026 | Finland has signed a joint statement on fusion energy research with the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and South Korea. The statement, signed in London on 14 September 2026, stresses the importance of international collaboration in addressing the technical, regulatory and trade challenges related to fusion energy.

11.1.2024 | Avtalet om rörlighet för ungdomar gör det lättare för ungdomar i åldern 18–35 år att bekanta sig med det andra landet genom att resa och arbeta tillfälligt. Avtalet träder i kraft den 1 mars 2024.

22.6.2023 | Statsminister Petteri Orpo deltar söndagen den 25 och måndagen den 26 juni i de nordiska statsministrarnas sommarmöte på Island. Det isländska ordförandeskapet i Nordiska ministerrådet har också bjudit in Kanadas premiärminister Justin Trudeau till mötet. Det är Petteri Orpos första utrikesresa som statsminister.

12.12.2022 | Den 13 december ska utrikesminister Pekka Haavisto delta i det nordiska N5-utrikesministermötet som hålls på distans. Även Kanadas utrikesminister Mélanie Joly deltar i mötet som gäst.

1.2.2023 | Inrikesministeriet rekommenderar allmän flaggning i Helsingfors tisdagen den 7 februari och onsdagen den 8 februari samt i Rovaniemi torsdagen den 9 februari med anledning av att Kanadas generalguvernör Mary Simon avlägger statsbesök.

12.12.2022 | Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will attend a virtual Nordic foreign ministers’ meeting in N5 format on 13 December. Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly will attend the meeting as a guest.

26.6.2023 | Huvudtemat för de nordiska statsministrarnas sommarmöte på Västmannaöarna i Island den 25 och 26 juni var hur man möter olika säkerhetshot. Det isländska ordförandeskapet i Nordiska ministerrådet hade även bjudit in Kanadas premiärminister Justin Trudeau till mötet.

22.6.2023 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will attend the summer meeting of Nordic prime ministers in Iceland on Sunday 25 and Monday 26 June. The Icelandic Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers has also invited Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to the meeting. This is Petteri Orpo’s first trip abroad as Prime Minister.

4.3.2024 | Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman will lead a Team Finland visit to Canada and the US on 5–8 March 2024. The main themes of the visit will be marine industry and ports. A business delegation of 30 people from 20 different companies and organisations will participate in the trip.

11.1.2024 | The Youth Mobility Agreement allows Canadian and Finnish young people aged 18 to 35 to explore the other country through temporary work and travel. The agreement enters into force on 1 March 2024.

13.11.2024 | New trilateral arrangement formalizes collaboration on the production of Arctic and polar icebreakers

5.2.2024 | Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio will lead a trade mission to the province of Nova Scotia in Canada and visit the country’s capital, Ottawa, on 5–8 February.

26.6.2023 | The main theme of the Nordic prime ministers’ summer meeting in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland on 25 and 26 June was how to respond to various security threats. Along with the Nordic prime ministers, the Icelandic Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers invited Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to the meeting.

25.11.2024 | Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sari Essayah visits Canada with a delegation of the Finnish forestry and bioeconomy actors on 24–28 November. Minister Essayah will deliver the keynote speech at the Scaling Up Bioeconomy Conference 2024 in Ottawa. Finland is the Feature Country of this year’s conference. In addition, the Minister and the business delegation will visit the province of Quebec.

29.9.2026 | Finland’s Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen will attend a meeting of Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) defence ministers in Reykjavík, Iceland, on 1–2 October 2026. This is the first official meeting of JEF defence ministers to be held in person this year.

16.2.2026 | Arbetsminister Marttinen är på ett besök i Kanada och Förenta staterna. Syftet med resan är att bidra till Finlands långsiktiga mål att fördjupa det strategiska samarbetet och kompetenssamarbetet med Nordamerika. Samtidigt vill Finland hitta hållbara lösningar på frågor som gäller att utveckla och få tillgång på kompetent arbetskraft tillsammans med partnerländerna.

19.8.2025 | On August 19, Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand during her visit to Finland.

19.11.2025 | On 18 November, Finland, the United States and Canada signed a trilateral Joint Statement of Intent (JSOI) confirming support for the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE) Pact, launched in autumn 2024. The JSOI was signed in Washington DC by Sakari Puisto, the Finnish Minister of Economic Affairs, Kristi Noem, the United States Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, and Kirsten Hillman, Canada’s Ambassador to the United States.

20.10.2025 | Finnish Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio will travel to the Province of Ontario, Canada, on 20–23 October 2025. During his visit, the Minister will visit Toronto and the country’s capital Ottawa.

16.2.2026 | Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen is currently visiting Canada and the United States. The visit is part of Finland’s long-term goal to intensify strategic cooperation and collaboration on skills and expertise with North America. Another purpose is to find sustainable solutions for the development, availability and opportunities for skilled labour in the marine industry together with partner countries.

15.4.2026 | Finland and Canada have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will strengthen their bilateral collaboration especially in marine industry and Arctic matters. The MoU was signed by Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto and Canada’s Minister of Industry Melanie Joly in Ottawa on 14 April 2026.

13.4.2026 | Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen will travel to Canada on 13–14 April.

4.8.2026 | On 31 July 2026, the state-owned special assignment company Arctia, which operates under the ownership steering of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, signed a chartering agreement to operate a multi-purpose icebreaker in the Canadian Arctic in late 2026. 

22.9.2026 | Foreign Ministers from the allied Arctic nations, the Arctic Seven (A7), met in New York on 21 September. Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen represented Finland at the meeting. The A7 comprises Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Canada and the United States. The meeting was convened by the United States.

22.9.2026 | De arktiska allierade ländernas (A7) utrikesministrar samlades till ett gemensamt möte i New York den 21 september. Finland representerades av utrikesminister Elina Valtonen. Till A7-länderna hör Finland, Sverige, Danmark, Norge, Island, Kanada och Förenta staterna. Mötets sammankallare var Förenta staterna.
