11.7.2025 | Finland’s Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio will attend an extraordinary meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in its trade configuration in Brussels on 14 July 2025. The Council will exchange views on the EU’s trade relations with the United States and the ongoing trade agreement negotiations with various trading partners. The ministers will also hold a policy debate on EU–China trade relations.

14.2.2022 | Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will attend the Global Disability Summit in Oslo on 16–17 February. He will announce the Foreign Ministry’s commitments on the promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities at the meeting. The aim of the summit is to intensify the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and thereby to bring about substantial improvements in the lives of persons with disabilities.

12.2.2025 | In their meeting on Wednesday 12 February, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy agreed on Finland’s positions on the Meeting of NATO Ministers of Defence taking place on 13 February. The agenda for the defence ministers’ meeting covers a wide range of issues related to the development of deterrence and defence, defence spending and burden sharing and support for Ukraine. The meeting will also prepare for the NATO Summit next summer.

30.3.2021 | On 31 March 2021, Finland will participate in the IEA-COP26 Net Zero Summit, which will discuss measures to speed up the transition to clean energy as well as means for States to cooperate more effectively to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 in order to achieve international climate goals. Finland’s representative at the virtual meeting will be Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä.

The aim of the third EU-CELAC Summit was to enhance cooperation and demonstrate a shared commitment to maintaining the rules-based international order.

4.3.2021 | On 4 March 2021 more than 100 people participated in a webinar to boost Finland’s preparations for the UN Food Systems Summit FSS in September 2021. The webinar was organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and Ministry for Foreign Affairs. In his address to the webinar David Nabarro, the leader of the global FSS Dialogues process, noted that Finland has taken an active lead in reforming the world’s food system to make it more sustainable and equitable.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stressed that the partnership between the EU and the Western Balkans has become even more important for ensuring European security due to Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine.

The main items on the agenda are cooperation in the fight against the coronavirus, economic cooperation and reforms related to the rule of law.

Finland’s representative at the meeting will be President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö. Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari, in his role as the World Food Programme’s School Meals Champion, will speak at the event on school meals.

15.6.2022 | The EU ministers responsible for employment and social affairs will meet at the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council (EPSCO) in Luxembourg on 16 June 2022. Finland’s representatives at the Council will be Minister of Employment Tuula Haatainen and Minister of Social Affairs and Health Hanna Sarkkinen.

3.6.2024 | The UN climate change negotiations will continue in Bonn, Germany on 3-13 June. The negotiations among public officials will pave the way for decisions to be made at the Climate Change Conference in Baku concerning e.g. the finance target, and will continue the efforts to phase out fossil fuels.

4.11.2024 | The world states will convene at the Climate Change Conference COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan on 11–22 November. The aim is to decide on a new common climate finance target. A faster energy transition will be needed as the countries are preparing to set new emission reduction targets during next year.

30.5.2023 | An informal meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs will be held in Oslo from 31 May to 1 June. This will be the second meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs which Finland attends as a member of the Alliance.

19.6.2024 | In its meeting on Wednesday 19 June, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs discussed the progress of Finland’s efforts to influence EU policy and ways to increase the number of Finns working in EU institutions. The Ministerial Committee also discussed the Union’s enlargement prospects and outlined Finland’s positions for upcoming meetings.

21.3.2024 | EU leaders, meeting in Brussels on Thursday 21 March, showed strong support for Ukraine and moved forward on Europe’s defence preparedness and capabilities.

1.4.2025 | The security environment in Finland and Europe has changed fundamentally. Russia poses a long-term threat to Europe. This requires the Government to take action. Finland will continue to strengthen its defence on a threat-informed and needs-driven basis.
