12.2.2025 | In their meeting on Wednesday 12 February, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy agreed on Finland’s positions on the Meeting of NATO Ministers of Defence taking place on 13 February. The agenda for the defence ministers’ meeting covers a wide range of issues related to the development of deterrence and defence, defence spending and burden sharing and support for Ukraine. The meeting will also prepare for the NATO Summit next summer.

14.2.2022 | Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will attend the Global Disability Summit in Oslo on 16–17 February. He will announce the Foreign Ministry’s commitments on the promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities at the meeting. The aim of the summit is to intensify the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and thereby to bring about substantial improvements in the lives of persons with disabilities.

13.12.2023 | In its meeting on Wednesday 13 December, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions for the EU-Western Balkans Summit on 13 December and the European Council meeting on 14–15 December, both of which will be held in Brussels. In addition, the Ministerial Committee discussed the government resolution on the exercise of advance influence within the EU and proposals for amending the EU Treaties.

This year, Finland holds the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, which is the official body for intergovernmental Nordic cooperation.

4.10.2024 | The Cabinet Committee on EU Affairs has formulated the position of Finland on using immobilised Russian Central Bank assets to support Ukraine, and on establishing a cooperation mechanism for loans to Ukraine and granting macro-financial assistance to Ukraine.

21.3.2025 | In its meeting in Brussels on Thursday 20 March, the European Council agreed on a number of measures to strengthen European defence. Discussions also focused on arms assistance and other support to Ukraine. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo represented Finland at the meeting.

13.12.2023 | The EU Member States and the Western Balkan countries deepened their cooperation at a summit in Brussels on Wednesday 13 December. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stressed that the partnership between the EU and the Western Balkans has become even more important for ensuring European security due to Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine.

4.3.2021 | On 4 March 2021 more than 100 people participated in a webinar to boost Finland’s preparations for the UN Food Systems Summit FSS in September 2021. The webinar was organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and Ministry for Foreign Affairs. In his address to the webinar David Nabarro, the leader of the global FSS Dialogues process, noted that Finland has taken an active lead in reforming the world’s food system to make it more sustainable and equitable.

30.3.2021 | On 31 March 2021, Finland will participate in the IEA-COP26 Net Zero Summit, which will discuss measures to speed up the transition to clean energy as well as means for States to cooperate more effectively to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 in order to achieve international climate goals. Finland’s representative at the virtual meeting will be Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä.
