14.12.2021 | Finland has chaired the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC) in 2021. The Chairship culminated in a Ministerial Meeting on the state and future of an open and safe internet in December, hosted by Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto.

5.4.2022 | To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the autonomy of Åland, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs will organise a seminar in The Hague on 5 April in cooperation with the Government of Åland and the Embassies of Finland and Sweden in The Hague.

30.11.2021 | On 30 November 2021, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) decided that Finland is to chair the organisation in 2025. The year 2025 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act, which was adopted at the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe in 1975.

23.3.2022 | Prime Minister Sanna Marin met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Brussels on Wednesday 23 March. In their meeting, the prime ministers discussed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the sanctions imposed on Russia, extensive assistance to Ukraine, the development of European security and defence cooperation and Finland’s relationship with NATO.

22.3.2022 | Minister of Social Affairs and Health Hanna Sarkkinen will attend a meeting of the Nordic Council in Malmö on 22 March. The meeting will discuss the Nordic welfare model and its future.

25.2.2022 | The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2) brings together nearly 200 Member States to launch the negotiations on a global plastics agreement. UNEA is the highest environmental decision-making body in the UN. The Finnish delegation in Nairobi, Kenya, is headed by State Secretary Terhi Lehtonen from the Ministry of the Environment.

11.5.2021 | Today, 11 May 2021, marks the 10th anniversary of the opening for signature of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, also known as the Istanbul Convention. In order to mark this occasion, European gender equality ministers and many other ministers from EU Member States have signed a common initiative calling on European countries to quickly accede to the Convention.

22.10.2021 | On 25–26 October, Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will attend the Foreign Minister’s meeting of the Barents Euro-Arctic Council in Tromsø. The meeting will end Norway’s Chairmanship, after which the Chairmanship will be handed over to Finland for the next two years.

5.7.2022 | Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Tytti Tuppurainen visited Kosovo, North Macedonia and Albania on 3–5 July. Minister Tuppurainen visited the region together with Thomas Byrne, Ireland’s Minister of State for European Affairs. The purpose of the visit was to promote the EU integration of Western Balkan countries and discuss the security situation in Europe.

8.12.2021 | Minister for Nordic Cooperation Thomas Blomqvist will participate virtually in a conference on strong democratic systems typical of the Nordic countries. The conference, which will be held in Copenhagen on 8 December aims to show how sustainable democracy in the Nordic region is strengthened by the participation of the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland in Nordic cooperation alongside with the Nordic states.

25.10.2021 | Monday 25 October 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Finland and Luxembourg.

2.12.2021 | Internetvapausjärjestö Freedom Online Coalition (FOC) juhlistaa 10-vuotistaivaltaan Suomen puheenjohtajuuskauden päätteeksi. Ulkoministeri Pekka Haavisto isännöi 3. joulukuuta pidettävässä virtuaalisessa ministerikokouksessa 34 jäsenvaltion ulkoministereitä. Kokouksessa julkaistaan FOC-maiden julistus avoimen ja saavutettavan internetin ja ihmisoikeusperustaisen digitalisaation puolesta.

4.10.2021 | Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari will visit France and Germany on 4–8 October 2021. In Paris, Minister Skinnari will attend the annual OECD Ministerial Council Meeting and meet key French ministers and business representatives. In Stuttgart, Skinnari will participate in the business forum on the future of the automotive industry. The programme includes meetings with key German companies, and decision-makers from the state of Baden-Württemberg.
