4.4.2022 | In its report published on 4 April, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) points out that emission reduction measures must already be accelerated during the next decade to achieve international targets for limiting climate warming. Greenhouse gas emissions are growing in all sectors, and in the past decade the average GHG emissions were higher than ever before. The pace of growth in emissions has, however, slowed.

The invitation-only event will also be attended by the foreign ministers of Finland and Estonia, Pekka Haavisto and Eva-Maria Liimets, as well as other ministers from the governments of the two countries.

The NDC (nationally determined contributions) Pipeline Accelerator Multi-Donor Trust Fund, ACL in short, is one of the IDB’s main climate finance facilities. Finland's contribution is EUR 5 million.

5.5.2020 | An energy-themed webinar organised by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment on 5 May 2020 focused on the production of clean energy and the need for energy in the future. One of the issues addressed at the webinar was the effect of the coronavirus crisis and the related recovery measures on investments required to pursue the 2035 climate target.

14.7.2021 | On Wednesday, the European Commission unveiled a major package of legislative proposals on climate that would reduce the EU’s net emissions by at least 55 per cent by 2030. The Fit for 55 package contains 13 legislative proposals, eight of which would strengthen existing legislative instruments and five that are completely new regulations.

12.5.2022 | The European Commission has approved the EU regional and structural policy programme, Innovation and Skills in Finland 2021–2027, and Finland’s partnership agreement among the first in the whole EU. The programme promotes the vitality, employment and wellbeing of the regions. The partnership agreement describes the strategic direction and mutual coordination of different funds.

15.12.2021 | At their summit in Brussels on Wednesday 15 December, the EU Member States and the countries in the Eastern Partnership adopted a joint declaration and a revised programme for Eastern Partnership policy beyond 2000. The long-term policy objectives emphasise recovery, resilience and reform. Prime Minister Sanna Marin represented Finland at the summit.

19.11.2020 | On 19 November, the Government submitted to Parliament its proposal to amend the budget proposal for 2021. The proposal will allocate funding for the second phase of future-oriented investments and for increased expenditures arising from COVID-19, among other things. The Government is committed to protecting people’s wellbeing and the ability of businesses to cope during the COVID-19 crisis in Finland, with as few detrimental human and economic consequences as possible.

16.7.2021 | European Commission published new EU Forest Strategy on 16 July 2021, aiming for better coordination on forest-related initiatives as well as increasing the cooperation of Member States on forests. The Strategy highlights climate and biodiversity targets, which are important also for Finland. The strategy has evolved towards more balanced version during the preparation by the Commission, leaving however room for improvement in the initiatives to follow.

5.7.2023 | Euroopan komissio on antanut 5.7. lainsäädäntöehdotuksen jätepuitedirektiivin muuttamiseksi. Muutos keskittyy kahteen resurssivaltaiseen alaan - tekstiili- ja elintarvikealaan. Lainsäädäntöehdotuksen tavoitteena on vähentää näiden alojen ympäristö- ja ilmastovaikutuksia sekä parantaa ruokaturvaa ja tekstiilialan työllisyyttä.

5.7.2023 | Europeiska kommissionen har den 5 juli lagt fram ett lagstiftningsförslag om ändring av ramdirektivet om avfall. Ändringen fokuserar på två resursintensiva sektorer – textilsektorn och livsmedelssektorn. Syftet med lagstiftningsförslaget är att minska miljö- och klimateffekterna inom dessa sektorer och att förbättra livsmedelstryggheten och öka sysselsättningen inom textilsektorn.

Maankäyttösektorin ilmastotavoitteiden saavuttamista arvioitaisiin jatkossa aiempaa enemmän sektorin todellisten päästöjen ja nielujen pohjalta nykyisten monimutkaisten laskentasääntöjen sijaan. Tätä uudistusta Suomi on toivonut jo pitkään.
