27.2.2024 | Finland has joined the multilateral Joint Statement Endorsing Principles for 6G led by the United States. The joint statement was published at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 27 February 2024.

8.12.2023 | Finland is currently preparing for its chairpersonship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2025. As part of the preparations, Finland will reinstate the OSCE delegation, which operates in conjunction with the Embassy of Finland in Vienna, as Permanent Representation as of 1 January 2024.

12.12.2022 | Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will attend a virtual Nordic foreign ministers’ meeting in N5 format on 13 December. Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly will attend the meeting as a guest.

3.11.2023 | Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman is pleased that the change of ownership of Helsinki shipyard has been completed, with ownership transferred to Canada’s Davie Shipbuilding from the Russian Algador Holdings.

7.10.2024 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met in London between 30 September and 4 October 2024. The 82nd session of the Committee continued negotiations on global measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from marine transport. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Minna Kivimäki attended the session on 30 September–2 October 2024.

1.3.2024 | Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman will attend the annually organised PDAC, the world’s largest mineral exploration and mining event, and the meeting of mining ministers in Toronto, Canada on 3-4 March 2024. The main theme of the meeting will be responsible mining and the clean transition.

27.9.2024 | Finland has joined the US-led multilateral declaration on submarine cable security. The parties to the declaration agreed on common objectives and means for improving the security and resilience of submarine cables.

11.2.2025 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo attended the AI Action Summit in Paris on Monday and Tuesday, 10–11 February. In his closing remarks, Orpo underscored that artificial intelligence offers immense opportunities to Finland. The Prime Minister also met with several heads of state and government.

5.3.2025 | At its meeting on Wednesday 5 March, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions for the Special European Council on Thursday 6 March in Brussels, where the EU leaders will discuss Ukraine and European defence.

11.7.2024 | On 11 July 2024, Finland, the United States and Canada published a trilateral declaration concerning cooperation in the production of icebreakers (ICE). The initiative was signed by the Presidents of Finland and the United States Alexander Stubb and Joe Biden and Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau.

21.10.2024 | Reko-Antti Suojanen (M.Sc. Engineering) will lead the national coordination of ICE Pact – an icebreaker collaboration effort between Finland, the United States and Canada.

7.3.2025 | Representatives from the United States, Canada, and Finland discussed concrete implementation of this important initiative to build Arctic and Polar icebreakers.

10.10.2025 | Finland and the United States have signed a memorandum of understanding on icebreaker cooperation. Finnish President Alexander Stubb and US President Donald Trump signed the memorandum of understanding at their meeting in Washington on 9 October. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo also attended the meeting. This memorandum of understanding lays the foundation for commercial agreements between the United States Coast Guard and Finnish companies.

23.6.2025 | Finland will start as co-chair of the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC), which advocates for media freedom and the safety of journalists. Finland will hold the two-year co-chairmanship together with Germany and succeed Estonia when it concludes its term as co-chair on 30 June.

27.10.2025 | Finland has become the thirteenth country to join the Tallinn Mechanism—an international initiative that helps Ukraine enhance its cyber resilience and digital security.

15.10.2025 | Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen will visit Reykjavik on 16–17 October and attend the Arctic Circle Assembly.

17.10.2025 | On Tuesday 14 October, Finland joined the Tallinn Mechanism to support Ukraine’s cyber security and resilience. The mechanism coordinates international cyber security support to Ukraine’s public administration and critical infrastructure.

27.8.2025 | The Canadian province of Québec and Finland are deepening their collaboration in the forest sector. They have signed a declaration of intent to improve the conditions for commercial and research collaboration in forestry and bioeconomy.

25.11.2025 | On 25 November, Finland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen presented a policy document outlining Finland’s Arctic foreign and security policy. The Foreign Minister’s policy document complements Finland’s Strategy for Arctic Policy (2021) and the Government report on Finnish Foreign and Security Policy (2024).

5.11.2025 | Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen signed an updated Comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (CMOU) of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) participant nations on behalf of Finland on Wednesday 5 November. The signing took place at a meeting of JEF defence ministers in Norway.

26.11.2025 | A preliminary study, commissioned by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, urges Finland to consider creating a national manual on the law of armed conflict. The study was supported by a group of experts from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Finnish defence administration and the Finnish Red Cross.

13.6.2025 | Representatives from Canada, Finland and the United States met to discuss the next steps in the ICE Pact collaboration to build Arctic and polar icebreakers.

28.11.2025 | Finnish Biodiversity Award 2023–2024 was given to an actor that had done something inspiring to halt biodiversity loss. The winner of the competition was Crowdsorsa mobile game that has already helped fight against invasive alien species in Finland on a total of 4 million square metres. Honourable mentions were awarded to the cities of Kauniainen and Vantaa. The prizes were awarded by Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.

13.11.2025 | Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden announced today on 13 November 2025 that they will fund a USD 500 million package of defence materiel for Ukraine sourced from the United States, under the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative of NATO and the United States.

12.11.2025 | The Sports Ministers of 33 countries and the European Commission have expressed their grave concern about the decision of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) in September to discontinue the partial suspensions of the National Paralympic Committees of Belarus and Russia from the Paralympic Games.

18.8.2025 | Finland is holding the Presidency of the Nordic (N5) cooperation on foreign and security policy in 2025. Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen has invited the Nordic foreign ministers to a meeting on Nordic cooperation on foreign and security policy in Espoo on 18–19 August. Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand has been invited to the meeting.

4.12.2025 | The economy of wellbeing offers tools for policy makers to secure the preconditions for a good life both for the current population and future generations. A new working paper by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) analyses how wellbeing economy practices have been integrated into decision-making in ten countries. This comparison will also help Finland create its own governance model.

19.11.2025 | A report of the Independent International Panel on Arbitrary detention in State-to-State Relations was published in New York on 28 October. Ambassador Marja Lehto served as the Vice-Chair of the Panel.

14.11.2025 | Finnish Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto will visit Washington DC on 17–18 November to attend an ICE Pact Principals Meeting between Finland, the United States and Canada, the partner countries in the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE Pact). After the Principals Meeting, a meeting of national coordinators and working groups and an Industry Day event will take place in Washington DC on 19–20 November.

24.3.2026 | Finland has joined the US-led Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) programme as a contributing partner. Led by the State Department’s Bureau of Arms Control and Nonproliferation (ACN), FIRST harnesses the power of the nuclear industry to expedite responsible nuclear reactor deployment worldwide.

26.3.2026 | The Ministry for Foreign Affairs will continue to reform its network of diplomatic missions by establishing a consulate in Munich, where Business Finland formerly had an office.

29.12.2025 | Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto is pleased with the agreement on icebreaker cooperation between the United States Coast Guard and the Rauma shipyard, according to which two icebreakers will be built at the shipyard. Negotiations between the Coast Guard and the Helsinki shipyard are also likely to be concluded in the near future, bringing the number of icebreakers to be built in Finland up to four.
