9.2.2023 | The Government adopted a resolution on hydrogen on 9 February 2023. In its resolution, the Government describes Finland’s objectives regarding hydrogen and the measures to promote them. Finland’s goal is to become the European leader in the hydrogen economy in the entire value chain. Finland has the capacity to produce at least ten per cent of the EU’s emissions-free hydrogen in 2030.

11.4.2025 | On Friday 11 April, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs discussed the ReArm Europe Plan, measures to simplify EU regulation, the state aid framework in the Clean Industrial Deal and the ‘stop-the-clock’ proposal, which is part of the Commission’s Omnibus I package.

5.3.2025 | On Wednesday 5 March, the Government held a more detailed discussion on the Room for Growth working group’s proposals to boost economic growth in Finland. The members of the Government split up into small groups chaired by the leaders of the government parties to discuss the different themes of the report: people, competencies and skills; operating conditions for growth companies; the energy market and the clean, green transition; and the defence industry.

28.6.2024 | On 24 June, the Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy decided that the Ministry of Finance would continue preparing a tax subsidy for large industrial investments that promote the clean transition. This tax subsidy would accelerate investments in the green transition.

6.9.2022 | In future, the Ministry of the Environment will focus even more strongly on three themes: comprehensive solutions to the ecological sustainability crisis, leading the green transition and living environments that support wellbeing.

7.6.2024 | The European Investment Fund (EIF) has finalised agreements with eight leading banks and financial institutions in Finland to assist small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), small mid-caps and housing companies. 24.2.2022 | Minister of Finance Annika Saarikko will represent Finland at the informal meeting of ministers for the economy and finance (Ecofin) to be held in Paris on 25–26 February and in the Eurogroup on 25 February. The security policy situation in Europe will also come up during the meetings.

Actions that strengthen general government finances can be targeted so that they systematically take the economy, legislation, taxation, incentives and governance structures towards the green transition. 12.1.2022 | The European Commission wants to increase opportunities for a successful social economy in Europe. The Commission’s interest in the matter is based on the benefits that the social economy can bring for employment and the economy as a whole. The Commission published its action plan for the social economy on 9 December 2021.

7.10.2022 | The four rounds of applications under the Low-carbon Built Environment Programme have provided EUR 13.6 million in funding for projects that promote climate work related to the built environment. At least two more application rounds will be organised, and the next one will begin at the Ministry of the Environment on 17 October 2022. The third application round of Business Finland will be open until the end of October.

30.5.2024 | EU Energy Ministers will meet in Brussels on May 30. The aim is to adopt the Council conclusions on promoting sustainable electricity network infrastructure. The ministers will also discuss the future of the REPowerEU plan and the status of the Green Deal. Finland will be represented at the meeting by Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen.

30.10.2024 | By summer 2023, only three years had passed since the publication of the sectoral low-carbon roadmaps in 2020. A provision in Petteri Orpo’s government program from June 2023 mandated the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and various sectors to revisit the roadmaps in light of the evolving operating environment. With this mandate, the update process began in autumn 2023. By autumn 2024, all 14 participating sectors had completed their updates.

21.5.2021 | On 17 May, the European Commission published a communication on promoting a sustainable blue economy in the EU. The Communication sets out a detailed agenda for the blue economy. A sustainable blue economy is a fundamental part of the broader European Green Deal, which is indispensable for the future of Europe. Sustainable blue economy is not possible without clean and healthy oceans and seas.

19.12.2024 | Finland is preparing a country pavilion for the next UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Belém, Brazil, from 10 to 21 November 2025. The Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs support the preparation of the pavilion in cooperation with companies, municipalities, universities and non-governmental organisations.

This year, companies will define ambitious reduction targets for their own operations. In Finland further measures are needed to achieve the recycling targets set in the EU for plastic packaging waste.
