21.5.2025 | On 20 May 2025, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment appointed three working groups to prepare the measures agreed by the Government in its mid-term policy review session in spring 2025. The working groups will prepare measures concerning the board-level employee representation, the Act on the Protection of Privacy in Working Life, and the time for taking carried-over holiday entitlement.

14.4.2026 | The Ministry of the Interior has sent out for comments a draft government proposal to update civilian intelligence legislation in response to the changed security environment.  The proposal would introduce new powers, including measures to prepare for state-sponsored threats, and clarifying amendments arising from practical needs identified in intelligence activities. Changes are also proposed to the non-disclosure periods for documents. The deadline for submitting comments is in late May.

31.12.2025 | Fellow citizens, The darkest part of winter is now behind us – every day is a little bit longer than the last. Winter storm Hannes, which raged through Finland, has now subsided. I would like to thank the authorities and everyone else who has worked hard to repair the damage caused by the storm. We can be proud of the way Finland comes together in these situations.

27.11.2025 | The Government submitted a legislative proposal for the national implementation of the European Union’s new Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) to Parliament on 27 November 2025.

10.11.2025 | The Finnish trade policy magazine Kauppapolitiikka has launched a new, free service on its website that brings together figures on Finland’s trade in goods and services by country, region, and country group. The service, which uses open data from Finnish Customs and Statistics Finland, makes it easier to browse and use statistics.

26.1.2026 | On 26 January 2026, Finland and 13 other European countries published a letter to the International Maritime Community on the safety and security risks caused by Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) interference. The signatories of the letter include the coastal states of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea: Finland, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden and the United Kingdom as well as Iceland.

11.3.2026 | On 11 March, Parliament passed a bill for legislative amendments that will cause public authorities to primarily send digital messages to people who are already using digital services provided by the authorities. Paper mail will remain an option. This change is scheduled to enter into force on 14 April once the amendments have been adopted.

11.3.2026 | Secretary-General of the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Mathias Cormann will visit Finland from 11 to 12 March. During the visit, he will meet Finland’s political leaders and attend a consultation event preceding the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting.

10.3.2026 | The Research and Innovation Council has launched a stakeholder survey on the implementation of the national strategic choices for RDI policy and activities. The survey will be open until Wednesday 29 April 2026. The main target group for the survey consists of key organisations for implementing the choices and putting them to use, including public and private RDI financiers, research organisations, businesses and branches of government, regional actors and other stakeholders.

29.1.2026 | On 29 January 2026, the Government submitted a communication to Parliament on the proposals of the European Commission and European Parliament for two regulations: the Digital Omnibus, which simplifies the EU’s digital rulebook, and the Digital Omnibus on AI, which simplifies the implementation of the harmonised rules on artificial intelligence.

9.6.2026 | A national operating model for clinical trials (FinTrials) will be established in Finland to improve the coordination of clinical trials of medicines and clinical investigations of medical devices. The aim is to increase the number of such studies in Finland, accelerate their launch and improve patients’ opportunities to access new treatments.

29.5.2026 | Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will open the Ministerial Council Meeting of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris on 3 June. Finland will chair the meeting for the first time in more than 40 years. Several ministers from Finland will attend the meeting. In Paris, Prime Minister Orpo will also have a bilateral meeting with the French President Emmanuel Macron.

1.6.2026 | The Ministry for Foreign Affairs arranged a trade mission to Thailand for innovative Finnish food sector and food technology companies. The visit opened up new opportunities in this rapidly growing market. The aim of the visit was to explore business opportunities, build networks and enhance understanding of Thailand’s food and innovation ecosystem.

14.2.2022 | Finland is preparing a national digital compass during spring 2022. In its meeting on 14 February 2022, the Ministerial Working Group on Developing the Digital Transformation, the Data Economy and Public Administration approved Finland’s digital vision for 2030 and set targets for the national digital compass as a basis for further work.

3.6.2026 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on 3 June. Their discussions focused on bilateral relations, the defence industry, the situation in Ukraine and the EU’s multiannual financial framework.
