12.3.2026 | An OSCE Moscow Mechanism report on the developments in Georgia in respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms since spring 2024 was presented at the meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council on 12 March. It offers recommendations to the Georgian authorities, the OSCE participating States and the international community on how to address problems of democracy, the rule of law and human rights.

18.6.2025 | In its meeting on Wednesday 18 June, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions the EU single market strategy and the proposal for a handling fee for goods ordered from outside the EU. The Ministerial Committee also discussed Finland’s positions on the 18th sanctions package currently under preparation and the review of the EU Emissions Trading Directive.

11.3.2024 | Finland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen will meet the Georgian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ilia Darchiashvili, in Helsinki on 13 March. Georgia was granted the status of EU candidate country in December 2023.

8.11.2024 | In its informal meeting on 8 November in Budapest, Hungary, the European Council adopted a declaration highlighting the need to strengthen the EU’s economy and competitiveness. The leaders of the EU Member States also discussed EU-US relations and the situation in Georgia. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo represented Finland at the meeting.

23.1.2025 | In its meeting on Thursday 23, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions for three council meetings and one informal ministerial meeting taking place next week.

15.11.2024 | At its meeting on Friday 15 November, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs specified Finland’s positions on the revision of the Energy Taxation Directive. The Ministerial Committee also outlined Finland’s positions for next week’s council meetings.

22.11.2024 | In its meeting on Friday 22 November, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs discussed Finland’s positions on the European Commission's annual EU enlargement package.

6.11.2024 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will represent Finland at two meetings hosted by the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU in Budapest on 7–8 November. Leaders from across Europe will convene for the meeting of the European Political Community on Thursday, and the European Council will hold an informal meeting on Friday. The main themes on the agenda are European security and the EU’s competitiveness.

16.10.2024 | In its meeting on Wednesday 16 October, the Ministerial Committee on EU Affairs outlined Finland’s positions for the October European Council on 17–18 October and the first-ever EU-Gulf Cooperation Council summit in Brussels on 16 October.

23.1.2024 | Antti Karttunen from Finland has been appointed as OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan as of 23 January 2024. Karttunen was appointed by Malta, the current Chair of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

15.12.2023 | On Thursday 14 December, the European Council decided to open negotiations on EU accession with Ukraine and Moldova. The Council also decided to grant candidate country status to Georgia. Negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina will begin once the necessary criteria are met. The EU leaders see enlargement as a geopolitical necessity in the current global situation.

28.6.2024 | At its meeting in Brussels on 27–28 June, the European Council decided on appointments to three high-level roles in EU institutions. The Council proposed that Ursula von der Leyen from Germany continue as President of the Commission, selected Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas as the candidate for High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and elected former Prime Minister of Portugal António Costa President of the European Council.

19.6.2024 | In its meeting on Wednesday 19 June, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs discussed the progress of Finland’s efforts to influence EU policy and ways to increase the number of Finns working in EU institutions. The Ministerial Committee also discussed the Union’s enlargement prospects and outlined Finland’s positions for upcoming meetings.

21.6.2023 | The informal meeting of ministers for European affairs on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 June in Stockholm will focus on the future of the EU. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Anders Adlercreutz, who was appointed on Tuesday 20 June, will represent Finland at the meeting.

29.8.2022 | EU foreign affairs ministers will meet at the Informal Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers (Gymnich) in Prague in the Czech Republic on 30–31 August. Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will represent Finland at the meeting. The foreign ministers will discuss the EU’s relations with Africa and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. They will meet the foreign ministers of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.

24.6.2022 | On 23 June, the European Council discussed the membership applications from Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia and the support for Ukraine and held a strategic discussion on the EU’s relations with its partners in Europe and the Western Balkans.

8.12.2022 | Finland will grant EUR 4.5 million in additional support to help Ukraine’s energy sector. The support will be used to address acute energy needs in schools, early education centres and hospitals and to develop the country’s energy efficiency in the longer term.

4.10.2022 | On Thursday 6 and Friday 7 October, Prime Minister Sanna Marin will attend two high-level meetings hosted by the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU in Prague. 6.10.2022 | At the meeting of European leaders in Prague on Thursday 6 October, Prime Minister Sanna Marin stressed that Europe must continue its strong and united support to Ukraine so that Ukraine can win the war. The first meeting of the European Political Community brought together the heads of state or government of more than 40 countries across Europe.

9.3.2022 | Prime Minister Sanna Marin will attend the informal meeting of EU heads of state or government in Versailles, France, on 10 and 11 March. At the meeting, the EU leaders will discuss Russia’s military attack on Ukraine and focus on ways to strengthen the Union’s defence capabilities, reduce energy dependency and build a more robust economic base.

In several high-level meetings, discussions focused on support for Ukraine in defending itself against Russia’s illegal war of aggression, the rule of law, EU enlargement and securing access to energy across Europe, among other topics.

20.6.2022 | The EU General Affairs Council will meet in Luxembourg on Tuesday 21 June. The topics on the agenda will be the preparation of the June European Council, the recommendations of the European Semester, the way forward on the Conference on the Future of Europe, and the transparency of political advertising. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Tytti Tuppurainen will represent Finland at the meeting.

18.3.2022 | Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will attend the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on 21 March. One of the main topics on the meeting agenda is Russian aggression against Ukraine. In their joint session, the foreign and defence ministers are also to adopt the Strategic Compass for security and defence cooperation in the EU. After the Foreign Affairs Council, Minister Haavisto will attend the opening session of the European Humanitarian Forum.

15.12.2021 | At their summit in Brussels on Wednesday 15 December, the EU Member States and the countries in the Eastern Partnership adopted a joint declaration and a revised programme for Eastern Partnership policy beyond 2000. The long-term policy objectives emphasise recovery, resilience and reform. Prime Minister Sanna Marin represented Finland at the summit.

11.3.2022 | At their informal meeting in Versailles, France, on 10 and 11 March, the EU heads of state or government strongly condemned the attack launched by Russia on Ukraine two weeks ago and demanded that Russia withdraw its troops from the country immediately and unconditionally. The leaders also adopted the Versailles Declaration, which seeks to bolster the Union’s defence capabilities and develop its economic base.

Finland’s representative at the informal video conference will be Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto. The Ministers will also hold an informal exchange with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba.

9.9.2021 | The rescue and evacuation operation in Afghanistan was in many ways unique and historic. Finland evacuated more than 400 people from Afghanistan in three weeks. This was possible through cooperation with national and international actors and between different departments of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The relief team at Kabul Airport played a key role, but the input of dozens of people both in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Helsinki and in many foreign missions was also required.
