24.2.2025 | According to the Government Programme, the regulation concerning the grounds for terminating employment related to the employee will be amended so that, in future, a proper reason would be sufficient for terminating an employment contract. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment requests comments on the legislative amendments to be submitted between 24 February and 7 April 2025. The amendments have been prepared in a tripartite working group that was not unanimous in its work.

7.3.2024 | On 7 March 2024, the Finnish Government submitted to Parliament a proposal concerning the implementation of the amendments made to the guidelines of the Maritime Labour Convention of the International Labour Organization in 2022. The proposal would adopt the amendments and bring them into force at the national level.

23.10.2025 | According to the government proposal, employers would be able terminate an employment contract where a proper reason exists. To determine whether proper reasons for dismissal exist, comprehensive consideration would still be used as a basis for assessment.
