8.5.2021 | On Saturday 8 May, Prime Minister Sanna Marin and the other European Council members took part in an informal social summit. At the meeting hosted by the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU, the leaders adopted the Porto Declaration emphasising the importance of social issues for the economic recovery of the Union. The EU leaders also had a discussion via videoconference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

10.5.2021 | The coronavirus epidemic has weakened the economic and employment prospects in the regions for more than a year, but the outlook is now cautiously positive. The improved expectations are driven by the assumption of a swift rollout of COVID-19 vaccine, an improving epidemiological situation and the lifting of restrictions.

8.11.2021 | Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari will visit Brazil from 8 to 12 November 2021. The Minister will have bilateral meetings with, among others, Minister of Foreign Affairs Carlos França, and Minister of the Institutional Security Cabinet of the Presidency of the Republic Augusto Heleno, with whom bilateral discussions have already taken place virtually in December 2020.

29.4.2021 | In its mid-term policy review, the Government published a sustainability roadmap that describes the current state of social, economic and ecological sustainability in Finland and sets goals for 2030. The roadmap gives specific form to the Government Programme’s goal of a socially, economically and ecologically sustainable society.

25.3.2021 | A national battery cooperation body will implement the Battery Strategy. The Strategy’s objective is to create a leading battery cluster in Finland by 2025, which will support Finland’s transition to a low-carbon economy. The cooperation body will bring together the different operators in the sector and promote the implementation of the Strategy’s objectives.

16.9.2021 | The meeting of ministers of economic affairs of the Nordic Council of Ministers was held in Helsinki on Thursday 16 September 2021. The ministers decided, among other things, to increase cooperation in sustainable mineral production and to promote sustainable tourism. The meeting was chaired by Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä.

20.9.2021 | Addressing the Transport and Communications Forum on 20 September 2021, Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka insisted that Finland is ideally positioned to succeed in a climate-neutral Europe: "We understand the power of partnership, and we have the opportunity and even the duty to apply the tools at our disposal."

11.3.2021 | Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä has been invited to the fifth meeting of the European Battery Alliance on Friday 12 March 2021. Commissioners Maroš Šefčovič and Thierry Breton have convened this high-level meeting, which will be organised virtually.

17.9.2021 | The high-level meetings of the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 76) will start in New York on Monday 20 September. Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will attend ministerial events in New York and have bilateral meetings with his counterparts and with representatives of the UN. Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari will represent Finland at several high-level meetings held in virtual format during the week.

10.11.2021 | Commissioner Mairead McGuinness will visit Finland on 10–12 November on the invitation of Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä and Minister of Finance Annika Saarikko. The Ministers and the Commissioner will discuss the EU’s sustainable finance classification system, or the EU taxonomy, with special focus on themes related to energy and forests. The Commissioner will also meet Prime Minister Sanna Marin and Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Jari Leppä in Helsinki.

20.7.2021 | Minister of Science and Culture Antti Kurvinen will visit the Tokyo Summer Olympics on 23–27 July 2021. During his visit, Minister Kurvinen will attend the opening of the Olympic Games and show his support for Finland’s athletes. He will also meet with Japanese partners to discuss issues related to education, research and innovation.

12.10.2021 | The 16th meeting of the Finnish-Russian Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation will be held in Helsinki on 14 October 2021. The Commission is co-chaired by Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari and Russia’s Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov. The meeting will address issues related to business environment in Finland and Russia, potential sectors of cooperation, and current topics of the Commission’s working groups.

26.6.2020 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has launched work to formulate a national battery strategy that will enable Finland to strengthen its role as a pioneer in sustainable battery manufacturing and recycling.

15.10.2021 | Finland bears its responsibility as part of the climate finance pledge of the Paris Agreement. At the United Nations Climate Change Conference, Finland will announce support for adaptation measures in developing countries in particular. The COP26 United Nations Climate Change Conference will be held in Glasgow from 31 October to 12 November 2021.

7.10.2021 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has allocated EUR 3 million in discretionary government grants to a new Centre of Expertise for Social Enterprises in accordance with the Government policy outlined in its mid-term policy review. Minister of Employment Tuula Haatainen signed the funding decision.
