20.10.2025 | The EU environment ministers will meet in Luxembourg on Tuesday 21 October. The ministers are expected to adopt Council conclusions on the preparations for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) and on the Water Resilience Strategy. The ministers will also discuss the European Ocean Pact proposed by the European Commission. Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will represent Finland at the meeting.

22.9.2025 | UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will host a Climate Summit in New York on 24 September as part of the UN General Assembly week. The aim of the event is to boost climate work in individual countries. Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will represent Finland at the summit.

17.9.2025 | The EU Environment Council will convene at an extraordinary meeting in Brussels on 18 September. The aim is to agree on the letter of intent to be submitted to the Secretariat of the UN Convention on Climate Change. The letter would concern the EU’s emission reduction commitment, i.e. the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). The ministers will also discuss the EU’s 2040 climate target and the proposal to amend the European Climate Law.

16.5.2025 | The Nordic Conference on Climate Change Adaptation (NOCCA 2025) on 14–15 May 2025 brought together 160 experts to Rovaniemi to share the most recent scientific knowledge and examples related to the preparation for climate risks.

4.9.2025 | The European Commission gave its proposal concerning amendments to the European Climate Law in July 2025. On 4 September 2025, the Finnish Government submitted a Union communication to Parliament where it states its opinion on the Commission’s proposal.

6.5.2025 | Nordic solutions to climate change adaptation will be sought at the Nordic Conference on Climate Change Adaptation (NOCCA2025) to be held in Rovaniemi on 14–15 May 2025. The conference is part of Finland’s and Åland’s Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

12.3.2025 | The last projects of the Catch the Carbon package of climate measures ended at the end of 2024. The implementation of the knowledge and climate change resilient solutions produced in the package of 180 measures will continue and be further intensified through cooperation in different parts of the country. The processes to support this include the activities of the National Climate Unit of the Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centres).

23.9.2024 | Cities and municipalities are in a key position in terms of reaching the climate targets, both in Finland and globally. Finland has joined the UN CHAMP initiative to support the climate work of cities and regions.

15.9.2025 | Minister of the Environment and Climate Sari Multala will take part in the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna on 15–16 September 2025. On Monday, she will deliver Finland’s national statement to the plenary.

16.10.2023 | The EU ministers responsible for the environment and climate change issues will meet in Luxembourg on 16 October to discuss the EU’s objectives for the negotiations at the UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Dubai. The conclusions to be adopted by the Environment Council will constitute the EU’s objective for the Climate Change Conference. Finland’s representative at the Environment Council will be Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen.

3.6.2024 | The UN climate change negotiations will continue in Bonn, Germany on 3-13 June. The negotiations among public officials will pave the way for decisions to be made at the Climate Change Conference in Baku concerning e.g. the finance target, and will continue the efforts to phase out fossil fuels.

24.5.2023 | Making a rare appearance in Finland, the Finnish-Ecuadorian climate and environmental activist Helena Gualinga will deliver a keynote speech at the invitation of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs at the World Village Festival in Suvilahti, Helsinki on Saturday 27 May.

13.11.2021 | Completed late on Saturday, the Glasgow Climate Change Conference has successfully reinforced commitment to the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

27.8.2025 | The Canadian province of Québec and Finland are deepening their collaboration in the forest sector. They have signed a declaration of intent to improve the conditions for commercial and research collaboration in forestry and bioeconomy.

15.10.2021 | Finland bears its responsibility as part of the climate finance pledge of the Paris Agreement. At the United Nations Climate Change Conference, Finland will announce support for adaptation measures in developing countries in particular. The COP26 United Nations Climate Change Conference will be held in Glasgow from 31 October to 12 November 2021.

5.10.2023 | Finland pledges to support the Green Climate Fund (GCF) with a total of EUR 60 million in 2024–2027. The pledge was announced today at the High-Level Pledging Conference in Bonn, deciding on the GCF’s second replenishment (GCF-2).

3.11.2022 | Prime Minister Sanna Marin will represent Finland at the meeting of the Heads of State and Government on Monday 7 November, and during the ministerial week between 14 and 18 November the Finnish delegation will be led by Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Maria Ohisalo.

13.7.2022 | At their informal meeting on 13–14 July in Prague, the EU ministers responsible for the environment will prepare for the UN’s meetings on biodiversity and climate change, discuss the environmental impacts of the war in Ukraine and explore what kind expert assistance the EU can offer. State Secretary Terhi Lehtonen will represent Finland at the meeting. 

27.10.2021 | The Parties to the UN Climate Change Agreement will meet in Glasgow, Great Britain on 31 October–12 November. This is the first meeting since the start of the term of the Paris Agreement in 2020. The key aim is to accelerate actions by countries towards stricter emission reductions.

5.10.2021 | On 6 October, the EU environment and climate ministers will meet in Luxembourg to discuss the EU climate package (Fit for 55), the EU Forest Strategy and the negotiating objectives of the EU for the Glasgow Climate Change Conference. Finland’s representative at the meeting will be Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Krista Mikkonen.

11.10.2021 | The Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday 11 October. Finland will have an important role in the meeting, as Minister of Finance Annika Saarikko will chair the meeting jointly with Indonesia’s Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani.

11.10.2024 | The EU environment ministers will meet in Luxembourg on Monday 14 October. The topics include the negotiation objectives of the EU for both the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP16) in October and UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in November. The ministers will also exchange views on the progress of the UN Plastics Treaty and on the EU Chemicals Strategy. Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen will represent Finland in Luxembourg.   

22.5.2023 | The Ministry for Foreign Affairs is a main partner of the World Village Festival taking place on 27–28 May in Suvilahti, Helsinki. This year’s festival theme is "Force for Change!".

3.3.2022 | The Government approved the proposal for the new Climate Change Act on 3 March. The Act has been reformed to make sure that Finland’s carbon neutrality target for 2035 and other international and EU climate objectives will be reached. In addition to the carbon neutrality target, the Act sets emission reduction targets for 2030, 2040 and 2050. The Act lays down provisions on climate policy plans, and the reform will extend the scope of the Act to the land use sector.

2.10.2024 | Ministers responsible for forest affairs in Europe signed a declaration on the development of sustainable forest management and decided to set up a facility that will focus on anticipating and managing the risks to forests. The declaration was signed by 35 Member States and supported by more than 20 observer organisations. Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sari Essayah represented Finland at the Conference, held in Bonn, Germany on 1–2 October 2024.

23.4.2025 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government has agreed on the General Government Fiscal Plan for 2026–2029. The decisions focus on reinforcing the conditions for economic growth and enhancing the security of Finland and the Finnish people. At the same time, the Government will ensure that public finances are sustainable. The growth package will be financed responsibly through measures to increase general government revenue and reduce expenditure.

30.3.2021 | On 31 March 2021, Finland will participate in the IEA-COP26 Net Zero Summit, which will discuss measures to speed up the transition to clean energy as well as means for States to cooperate more effectively to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 in order to achieve international climate goals. Finland’s representative at the virtual meeting will be Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä.

8.11.2022 | The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is hosting three side events at the COP27 Climate Change Conference in Egypt on 10 and 12 November in cooperation with the Nordic Council of Ministers. The events will present the Catch the Carbon package of climate measures and discuss research on mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from peatlands. The discussions will be streamed live as a webcast.

18.3.2022 | The Government has agreed on measures by which Finland will halve its emissions in the effort sharing sector by 2030 and set the course towards carbon neutrality by 2035. The measures decided in the autumn will be strengthened to ensure that the necessary emission reductions of 5.7 Mt in total will be reached. This is how Finland can achieve the emissions reduction target proposed by the European Commission for 2030 in the effort sharing sector, i.e.

1.4.2022 | Finland will organise a high-level meeting on adaptation finance in Lahti on 3–4 April. The purposes of adaptation finance include preparing for extreme weather events, such as droughts or floods. The meeting seeks to find a common direction to fulfil the commitments made in the UN Climate Change Conference COP26 and pave the way towards COP27 to be held in November 2022. The aim is also to expand the role of the private sector in the funding.

3.9.2024 | The 2025 budget proposal of Prime Minister Orpo's Government bolsters conditions for economic growth. Economic growth driven by the private sector will also serve to secure the financing base for central government finances. The fast-acting measures to curb indebtedness that were decided on due to the difficult situation in central government finances will move forward.

20.4.2022 | The member countries of the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action discussed climate and economic policy at the ministerial meeting held on 19 April. Finland and Indonesia co-chair the Coalition.

2.11.2021 | Finland has joined the Leaders' Declaration on Forests and Land Use of the Glasgow Climate Change Conference, whereby more than one hundred countries commit to stopping deforestation by 2030. President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö will speak at the publication event of the Declaration on Forests in Glasgow on Tuesday.

21.4.2021 | Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Krista Mikkonen will participate in the ministerial discussions to be held in connection with the US Climate Summit on Friday 23 April. The United States has invited 40 world leaders to a Leaders’ Climate Summit on 22–23 April.
