22.10.2021 | Minister for European Affairs Tytti Tuppurainen and Minister of Local Government Sirpa Paatero will represent the Finnish Government via remote connections at the second Plenary of the Conference on the Future of Europe to be held on 22–23 October 2021 in Strasbourg. Citizens’ representative Ninni Norra will also represent Finland at the event.

7.5.2021 | Global megatrends such as digitalisation, ageing population and climate change pose long-term challenges to the Nordic welfare model. The extensive research project carried out by the Nordic Council of Ministers and the research institute FAFO delved into the future of work in the Nordic countries. The final report of the project was published on 7 May 2021. The employment ministers from the Nordic countries will discuss the report’s themes at their informal video meeting on 2 June 2021.

10.5.2021 | EU foreign ministers will convene in Brussels on Monday 10 May. Finland’s representative at the meeting will be State Secretary Johanna Sumuvuori. The main topics on the meeting agenda will be the relations between the USA and the EU and the situation in the Western Balkans. Foreign ministers will also have a video conference with US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry.

2.11.2021 | Minister of Finance Annika Saarikko will participate in the Finance Day held in connection with the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow on Wednesday 3 November. She will also attend the meeting of the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action as a Co-Chair of the Coalition.

23.4.2025 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government has agreed on the General Government Fiscal Plan for 2026–2029. The decisions focus on reinforcing the conditions for economic growth and enhancing the security of Finland and the Finnish people. At the same time, the Government will ensure that public finances are sustainable. The growth package will be financed responsibly through measures to increase general government revenue and reduce expenditure.

1.11.2022 | In their meeting in Helsinki on Tuesday 1 November, the Nordic prime ministers conveyed a strong message that Russia’s war has permanently changed the Nordic region and that the countries’ common objectives will better prepare the region to operate in the changed environment. The Nordic region aims to be the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030.

21.3.2023 | The first UN Water Conference in 46 years takes place in New York on 22–24 March 2023. The Finnish delegation is composed of a broad spectrum of stakeholders representing the water sector. Jaana Husu-Kallio, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, stresses the importance of good governance of water resources, cooperation between the public and private sectors, and the high level of expertise Finland has in water issues.

15.10.2021 | The first phase of a meeting of parties to the UN Convention on Biodiversity provided good prospects for further negotiations aimed at halting biodiversity loss. Hosted by China in Kunming and partly arranged as a virtual event, the main achievement of the meeting was a unified message concerning the level of ambition in necessary measures. The Declaration stresses the need for swift action in all areas of society to halt the loss of biodiversity.

30.6.2022 | The United Nations Ocean Conference was held in Lisbon from 27 June to 1 July 2022. At the Conference, states pledged to contribute to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially that concerning life below water. Finland’s delegation was led by Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä. State Secretary Terhi Lehtonen and Permanent Secretary Juhani Damski attended the Conference as well.

18.9.2023 | The EU General Affairs Council (GAC) will meet on Tuesday 19 September in Brussels. Their agenda will include discussing Spain's request to amend Regulation No 1/1958 (the EU language regulation), preparing for the European Council's October meeting, and continuing the GAC’s rule of law dialogue. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Anders Adlercreutz will represent Finland at the meeting.

11.10.2021 | The Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity COP15 starts today on 11 October in Kunming, China. The aim is to agree on targets and actions to halt the global biodiversity loss. Actual decisions are expected in the second part of the Conference of the Parties, which will be held from 25 April to 8 May 2022.

14.10.2022 | EU foreign ministers will convene in Luxembourg on 17 October. Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will represent Finland at the meeting.

5.11.2021 | At the Climate Change Conference today, Finland signed the Glasgow Declaration for Fair Water Footprints. This is the first international commitment concerning responsible use of water. Water is in a key position in climate change adaptation, as well as in the mitigation efforts Finland was asked to sign the declaration as one of the leading countries in water responsibility.

18.10.2022 | Prime Minister Sanna Marin will attend the meeting of the European Council in Brussels on 20–21 October. Topics on the agenda will include Ukraine, energy, economic issues and external relations. The EU leaders will continue the discussion they began at the informal European Council on 7 October in Prague about the effects Russia’s war of aggression is having on the energy crisis and the economy in Europe.

27.10.2021 | Residents of the northernmost parts of Finland will have an opportunity to discuss EU issues with Minister for European Affairs Tytti Tuppurainen in Utsjoki on 2 November. The open discussion forum will focus mainly on cross-border cooperation and the impacts of climate change on the Sámi culture and local livelihoods.

29.6.2022 | The UN Ocean Conference, which will be held for the second time, brings together representatives of states, researchers, civil society, and businesses to discuss the oceans’ role in climate change mitigation as well as the future of a sustainable blue economy.

27.10.2021 | Prime Minister Sanna Marin will attend the 73rd Session of the Nordic Council and the meeting of Nordic Prime Ministers in Copenhagen on Wednesday 3 November. This year, Finland holds the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, which is the official body for intergovernmental Nordic cooperation.
