12.8.2021 | The 2022 budget proposal of Minister of Finance Annika Saarikko implements previous Government decisions.

6.5.2020 | On Wednesday 6 May, Prime Minister Sanna Marin will attend the EU-Western Balkans Summit, which will be held as a videoconference due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The main items on the agenda are cooperation in the fight against the coronavirus, economic cooperation and reforms related to the rule of law.

10.11.2021 | Finland participates in six transport initiatives adopted at the Glasgow Climate Change Conference. Countries make commitments to reduce emissions on the road, at sea and in the air. Most of these declarations were published on the Transport Day on 10 November 2021.

21.10.2021 | On 21 October 2021, the Government approved the EU regional and structural policy programme, Innovation and Skills in Finland 2021−2027, and decided to submit it to the European Commission. The programme supports industrial, energy, climate, innovation, education and employment policies as well as the work against exclusion and poverty.

3.3.2023 | Commerce accounts for most of Finland’s imports from China, while exports to China are centred around large industrial companies, according to a report on Finland’s trade dependence on China. The report was coordinated by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. It is a collection of information and figures to support discussions on Finland’s dependence on China.

6.5.2020 | The European Union's support for the Western Balkans in the coronavirus crisis came strongly to the fore at the EU-Western Balkans Summit on Wednesday 6 May. Prime Minister Sanna Marin represented Finland in the video conference.

14.7.2021 | On Wednesday, the European Commission unveiled a major package of legislative proposals on climate that would reduce the EU’s net emissions by at least 55 per cent by 2030. The Fit for 55 package contains 13 legislative proposals, eight of which would strengthen existing legislative instruments and five that are completely new regulations.

1.9.2022 | The budget proposal for 2023 of Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s Government builds sustainable growth for the future, secures purchasing power and assists people with the hike in electricity prices. The budget proposal responds to the effects of Russia’s war of aggression and inflation, improves safety and security, security of supply, and energy self-sufficiency, and provides further investment in research and development and in the green transition.

5.5.2020 | An energy-themed webinar organised by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment on 5 May 2020 focused on the production of clean energy and the need for energy in the future. One of the issues addressed at the webinar was the effect of the coronavirus crisis and the related recovery measures on investments required to pursue the 2035 climate target.

14.7.2021 | Finland supports systematic measures for achieving climate neutrality in the European Union by 2050. Transport will play an important role in achieving this goal. Published on 14 July 2021, the Commission proposal on climate action covers road traffic, maritime transport and aviation.

16.7.2021 | European Commission published new EU Forest Strategy on 16 July 2021, aiming for better coordination on forest-related initiatives as well as increasing the cooperation of Member States on forests. The Strategy highlights climate and biodiversity targets, which are important also for Finland. The strategy has evolved towards more balanced version during the preparation by the Commission, leaving however room for improvement in the initiatives to follow.

23.6.2020 | In its meeting on Tuesday 23 June, the Government also received a report on the measures to be taken based on the assessment of the crisis follow-up group headed by Permanent Secretary Martti Hetemäki. In addition, the Government received a briefing on the current epidemiological situation.

19.11.2020 | On 19 November, the Government submitted to Parliament its proposal to amend the budget proposal for 2021. The proposal will allocate funding for the second phase of future-oriented investments and for increased expenditures arising from COVID-19, among other things. The Government is committed to protecting people’s wellbeing and the ability of businesses to cope during the COVID-19 crisis in Finland, with as few detrimental human and economic consequences as possible.

12.5.2022 | The European Commission has approved the EU regional and structural policy programme, Innovation and Skills in Finland 2021–2027, and Finland’s partnership agreement among the first in the whole EU. The programme promotes the vitality, employment and wellbeing of the regions. The partnership agreement describes the strategic direction and mutual coordination of different funds.
