21.2.2022 | In future, everyone who wants one will be able to get a digital identity card for their smartphone alongside their traditional passport or identity card. This will make it possible to use various services both in person and online and will improve the protection of privacy. The Ministry of Finance launched a round of public consultation concerning the legislative amendments relating to the digital identity card on 21 February.

5.5.2022 | A Twinning project in Azerbaijan, led by Statistics Finland, focusing on Finnish data usage and statistical expertise, was very different from any previous Twinning projects. The project was launched remotely in June 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and it progressed despite the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the new virus variants. 2.12.2021 | The Ministry for Foreign Affairs has published a website on where, how and when Finland’s development cooperation funds are used. Launching this public site increases the openness and transparency of development cooperation.

1.3.2023 | The reform of continuous learning, launched under the Government Programme, has promoted the opportunities of working-age people to improve their knowledge and skills, and increased the availability of skilled labour. The final report on the reform implementation and on the next steps was submitted on 1 March 2023 to the Members of Parliament who participated in the drafting of the parliamentary policy approaches for continuous learning.

9.6.2026 | A national operating model for clinical trials (FinTrials) will be established in Finland to improve the coordination of clinical trials of medicines and clinical investigations of medical devices. The aim is to increase the number of such studies in Finland, accelerate their launch and improve patients’ opportunities to access new treatments.

11.3.2026 | Secretary-General of the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Mathias Cormann will visit Finland from 11 to 12 March. During the visit, he will meet Finland’s political leaders and attend a consultation event preceding the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting.

29.1.2026 | On 29 January 2026, the Government submitted a communication to Parliament on the proposals of the European Commission and European Parliament for two regulations: the Digital Omnibus, which simplifies the EU’s digital rulebook, and the Digital Omnibus on AI, which simplifies the implementation of the harmonised rules on artificial intelligence.

26.1.2026 | On 26 January 2026, Finland and 13 other European countries published a letter to the International Maritime Community on the safety and security risks caused by Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) interference. The signatories of the letter include the coastal states of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea: Finland, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden and the United Kingdom as well as Iceland.
