4.12.2025 | The Truth and Reconciliation Commission will submit its final report to the Government, the Sámi Parliament and the Skolt Sámi Siida Council on 4 December 2025. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission held consultations with almost 400 Sámi people and commissioned 25 separate studies by various experts. The final report contains recommendations and proposals for measures.

13.11.2025 | On Thursday 13 November 2025, the Government appointed a parliamentary working group to assess the recommendations put forth in the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Concerning the Sámi People and to draft a joint parliamentary opinion on follow-up measures. The task of the working group is to outline how the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations will be taken into account in decision-making and what will be done to promote their implementation.

19.3.2026 | Today, in cooperation with the Sámi Parliament and the Skolt Sámi Siida Council, the Government appointed a coordination and monitoring group to support the work of the parliamentary working group tasked with assessing the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Concerning the Sámi People. The group will support the work of the parliamentary working group and ensure effective cooperation between key actors.

1.9.2026 | On 1 September 2026, the Government of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo reached a decision on its budget proposal for 2027 and is steadily implementing the agenda it agreed at the spending limits session. The agenda includes EUR 100 million of investment in construction and numerous transport infrastructure projects. The Government’s targeted measures will support economic growth.

17.10.2023 | The Sámi Climate Council convened at its first meeting in Rovaniemi on 13 October. The mission of the Council is to bring the knowledge base and perspectives of the Sámi people into the climate policy processes.

27.6.2025 | The aim of the legislative reform is to promote the realisation of Sámi people's right to self-determination and to improve the operating conditions of the linguistic and cultural autonomy of the Sámi and those of the Sámi Parliament. The Government proposes that the President of the Republic approve the amendments to the Act on the Sámi Parliament today. They will enter into force on the 1st of August 2025.

7.6.2022 | The state remains highly committed to the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Concerning the Sámi people and considers the process very important and historically significant. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission Concerning the Sámi People is the first truth and reconciliation process to be implemented in Finland. It is understandable that it has taken some time for the commission to begin its challenging and difficult work.

28.10.2021 | In its session on 28 October, the Government appointed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Concerning the Sámi People. The work to establish the Truth and Reconciliation Commission has continued in line with the Programme of Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s Government. The matter has been prepared in close cooperation with representatives of the Finnish state, the Sámi Parliament and the Skolt Sámi Siida Council.

31.1.2022 | Anni-Kristiina Juuso, Master of Laws trained on the bench, has been appointed to serve as Secretary General of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Concerning the Sámi People. Juuso will take up her duties on 1 February 2022.

31.8.2021 | As part of Finland's Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers, a webinar will be held from 31 August to 1 September that will focus on the rights of indigenous people with disabilities and diseases causing memory loss, and on the provision of linguistically and culturally sensitive services. The webinar seeks to raise awareness of rights, and share experiences to develop services.

21.4.2023 | The Ministry of the Environment invites the Sámi Parliament, universities, research institutes and the Finnish Climate Change Panel to propose members to the Sámi Climate Council. The processes to appoint members to the Finnish Climate Change Panel and Finnish Nature Panel will start later.

18.3.2025 | Differences and disparities related to origin and ethnicity are strongly visible in various areas of children’s and young people’s lives, such as education, working life, health, wellbeing, inclusion, family life and safety. This is evident from a study by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) on the realisation of ethnic equality among people under 30 years of age in Finland.

9.3.2023 | The Sámi Climate Council to be established under the new Climate Act will begin its work in the spring. The purpose of the Sámi Climate Council is to bring the knowledge base and perspectives of the Sámi people into the climate policy processes.

14.6.2022 | On 13 June 2022, the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) adopted an opinion on a matter concerning the right to be included in the electoral roll in Sámi parliamentary elections.

24.8.2023 | On 24 August 2023, the Government appointed the Sámi Climate Council for a four-year term. The Sámi Climate Council is a new independent expert body, tasked with bringing the knowledge base and perspectives of the Sámi people into the climate policy processes.
