Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto attended the Ministerial Conference of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) in Brussels on 19 January 2020. Representatives of 35 countries attended the meeting that was organised by the IHRA. Finland joined the IHRA in 2011.

In his speech, Haavisto reminded that Europe must not forget its past. “Finland joined the IHRA to commemorate the Holocaust, to promote education and tolerance, and to fight the spread of distorted historical information, ignorance and hatred. We must provide equal protection to all regardless of ethnic origin or religious affiliation,” Foreign Minister Haavisto said.

“Important building blocks for the future consist of being familiar with one's own history and of appreciation of the diversity of European culture,” Haavisto noted. “Knowledge of the history of the Holocaust places on us a special responsibility in efforts to prevent and halt genocides.”
