Finland condemns North Korea's announcement of a nuclear test

North Korea's alleged nuclear test severely violates its international obligations not to produce and test nuclear weapons, the UN Security Council's resolutions 1718, 1874, 2087 and 2094, as well as the IAEA safeguards agreements. Finland fully agrees with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini'sstatement on the matter on 6 January.

Finland urges North Korea to reftain from additional actions that undermine the stability and security of the Korean Peninsula or increase tensions in the area. North Korea must fully comply with its international obligations and abandon its nuclear programme.

Finland urges North Korea to commit to close cooperation with the international community, including collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA and participation in the Six-Party Talks aimed at its nuclear disarmament through negotiations.
