Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen is the head of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.

Minister of Employment is responsible for matters concerning the Employment and Well-Functioning Markets Department. The Department is responsible for employment and employment policy, general labour policy regulation, functioning of the labour and commodity markets and related industrial and business policy issues. The Department’s areas of responsibility include internal market policy, consumer policy, competition policy, European Union supervision of state aid and regulation of public procurement.

Marttinen is in charge of matters related to employment services within the Regions and Growth Services Department.

The Minister of Employment is also responsible for matters concerning work-based immigration and for general administration matters at the ministry.

Profile

Matias Marttinen was born in Rauma in 1990. Marttinen completed his general upper secondary education at Rauman lukio in 2009 and graduated from the University of Turku in 2019 with a Master’s degree in Social Sciences. Marttinen’s military rank is Reserve Lieutenant.

Marttinen first became a Member of Parliament from the electoral district of Satakunta in 2019. Before becoming a Member of Parliament, Marttinen worked as Special Adviser to the Minister of Finance in economic affairs, as Special Adviser to the Minister of Education and Culture, and as Communications Secretary to the National Coalition Party’s parliamentary group.

Marttinen has served as a member of the Rauma City Council since 2013. In 2022–2025, Marttinen served as member of the county council of the wellbeing services county of Satakunta and as chair of the assembly of the regional council of Satakunta.

In 2023–2025, Marttinen chaired the parliamentary group of the National Coalition Party. During the government formation talks of Petteri Orpo’s Government, Marttinen led the negotiation table entitled ‘Sustainable public finances’. During the government term, he has chaired a working group preparing additional austerity measures and a parliamentary working group assessing YLE’s duties and funding.

In Parliament, Marttinen has served as a member of the Finance Committee and the Transport and Communications Committee and as vice chair of the Parliamentary Supervisory Council of the Bank of Finland.

Marttinen is a keen sportsman and enjoys various sports, such as roller skating, mountain biking and gym workout, in his free time.
