Minister Tuppurainen to visit Romania and Moldova

Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Tytti Tuppurainen will visit Romania on 16–17 January and Moldova on 18 January. The programme for her visit includes several high-level meetings in both countries. While in Romania, Minister Tuppurainen will also visit centres assisting Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees.

On Monday 16 January, Minister Tuppurainen will meet in Bucharest with Romania’s Minister of Justice Cătălin Predoiu, Minister for Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu, State Secretary for Energy Dan-Dragoș Drăgan and State Secretary for European Affairs Daniela Gitman. Topics on the agenda for their discussions will include the rule of law, securing access to energy in Europe, supporting Ukraine in defending itself against Russia’s invasion, and the situation with regard to EU enlargement.


Also on Monday 16 January, Minister Tuppurainen will visit a centre providing temporary accommodation and healthcare to Ukrainian refugees in Bucharest. On Tuesday 17 January, the Minister will visit a centre providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine in Suceava, Romania and a shelter accommodating Ukrainian refugees in the nearby town of Rădăuți.

On Wednesday 18 January, Minister Tuppurainen will meet with Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Andrei Spînu and Minister for Foreign Affairs Nicu Popescu in the capital of Moldova, Chișinău. Their discussions will focus on Moldova’s EU accession process, the rule of law, securing access to energy and the situation in Transnistria.

Minister Tuppurainen will travel to Moldova together with Romanian State Secretary for European Affairs Daniela Gitman. Minister Tuppurainen and State Secretary Gitman are colleagues on the EU General Affairs Council, which deals with issues of EU enlargement and the rule of law as part of its established agenda.

In June 2022, the European Council granted both Moldova and Ukraine the status of EU candidate country.
