Prime Minister Sanna Marin participated in several discussions at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, on 17 January.

In her speech to the International Business Council, the Prime Minister opened a discussion on the geopolitical and economic challenges facing Europe, many of which are related to Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine.

The Prime Minister stressed that Europe and its partners must do everything it takes to help Ukraine win the war and must commit to reconstruction in Ukraine once the war is over.

She went on to say that in the new geopolitical situation, Europe must be a strong global actor that promotes common values and defends its interests together with its partners.

In addition to economic growth, competitiveness, a well-functioning internal market and trade policy that supports it, Europe’s strategic autonomy is also about knowledge capital, education and skills, all of which are Finland’s strengths on the world stage.

Prime Minister Marin emphasised that in an era of insecurity and competition, like-minded partners such as Europe and the United States must work towards integration with new determination.

“The Inflation Reduction Act adopted in the United States has raised serious concerns in Europe for good reasons. Right now, it is crucial that we continue to try to find common solutions together with our closest allies,” the Prime Minister said.

Later in the day, Prime Minister Marin participated in an interview on the current international situation and her term as Prime Minister and took part in a panel discussion on Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine.

Her programme in Davos also includes meetings with various heads of state and representatives of the business community.

The annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos is attended by leaders from governments, business and civil society. This year, Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto, Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari and Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka are also taking part in the meeting.
