The International Labour Organization (ILO) will hold its International Labour Conference in Geneva on 3–14 June 2024. The agenda includes the protection of workers from biological hazards, discussion on the strategic objective of fundamental principles and rights at work, and decent work and the care economy.

Minister of Employment Arto Satonen will attend the meeting on 5–7 June and speak at the plenary session of the Conference.

The annual International Labour Conference is the highest decision-making body of the ILO. It decides on the adoption of conventions and recommendations and elects the ILO’s Governing Body for 2024–2027.

During his visit, Satonen will meet the ILO’s Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo, and submit to him Finland’s ratification documents on the Convention concerning the elimination of violence and harassment in the world of work.

In connection with the conference, Satonen will have discussions with the ILO’s Deputy Director-General Celeste Drake, Assistant Director-General Mia Seppo, who is responsible for employment and social security, and Director of the International Labour Standards Department Corinne Vargha. Satonen’s agenda also includes meetings with other leaders of the ILO, World Economic Forum (WEF), World Bank and World Trade Organization (WTO).

Director Vargha is responsible for the ILO’s supervisory system to which Finland is committed. The aim of the meeting between Satonen and Vargha is to discuss the ILO’s supervisory system in general. At the meeting, Satonen will explain the background and preparation of the new legislation on industrial peace, about which the ILO has written to Finland. Finland’s response has been submitted to the Director of the ILO’s International Labour Standards Department.
