On Tuesday evening, 7 July, the heads of state or government of the euro area discussed the situation in Greece following the country's referendum. The Prime Minister of Greece, Aléxis Tsípras, told the meeting about a new request for financial assistance, which Greece intends to present to the European Stability Mechanism on 8 July. The Greek government is expected to submit a detail proposal for its reform agenda by 9 July at the latest.

"Finland's main positions have not changed. Greece needs to present a credible proposal and proof of the country's real commitment in economic reforms", Prime Minister Juha Sipilä said.

"Euro area countries will assess the Greek proposal and decide whether the conditions to restart the negotiations are met", Prime Minister Sipilä said.

The leaders will meet again on Sunday 12 July.
